Probably infection: If it's short term ie days, then likely to be infection. Most of them are viral in nature (70%). If it lasts more than 5-7 days then it is reasonable to start antibiotics.

Dr. can check throat: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep). A couple days of throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) can lessen pain.

??Tonsillar stones: You may have tonsillar stones which is just debris from food particles and bacteria hiding in the crypts of your tonsils. Warm salt water gargle will help dislodge some of this. If it persists or becomes problematic see your dentist or ENT

This may be strep throat: It sounds like you should go to your provider and get your throat swabs to rule out strap throat. If you have "strep" it's important to take a seven day course of penicillin or amoxicillin. You will feel better quickly and you won't be contagious.   If you just have a virus, plan on saltwater gargle,  tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen for pain and fever, and feeling crumby for 5-10 days.

See below: Could be a mild case of strep throat (pharyngitis).  However, sore throat even with white spots is often  caused by viral infection.

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. Given the duration of the symptoms, it would be prudent to see a doctor. 
In the meantime, try gargling with warm saline solution.

If vitamin Z doesn't: do the trick after 3 days it's likely you have a viral pharyngitis which is much more likely than a strep throat.  Did you even see a physician or was this called in for you like it is done many thousands of times inappropriately every year? Viral pharyngitis peaks at 4 days and then begins to improve almost invariably unless you smoke in which case the residual symptoms can last for a couple week

Sore Throat: Viral sore throats usualy clear up on thier own within a few days. If your symptoms are severe or last longer see your doctor for poosible cultures and antibiotics. If this is frequent you should consult an ENT doc to discuss further options.
