Need diagnosis....: Your symptoms could be due to infection like acute bronchitis, throat infection, sinusitis, etc. You could also have bronchospasm due to allergies and the resulting cough is causing your throat to be sore. All these possibilities have different treatments so you should be evaluated by your doctor so the diagnosis can be made and treatment rendered.

my 10 year old son has had sore throat for 5 days and been coughing incessantly for the past 3. he woke up late (11am instead of normal 7 to 8am), feels tired and has diminished appetite. he is currently taking acuzyrt, tussilinct and flusin syrups.

Temperature: Please provide fluids, monitor his temperature, and if there is a fever or shortness of breath, please call your physician.  Avoid exposure to dust, mold, animal dander and smoke. If he has a history of allergies, continue his usual allergy medication, otherwise discontinue the allergy medication. Please follow up and he may need an inhaler and/or steroids to treat his cough.

See doctor: It is possible that you have strep throat, and this should be treated if you test positive or look clinically as if that is the diagnosis.  This may be several other things besides that, but very few of them will have the potential for severe complications like rheumatic fever that strep throat does.

Time to get checked: Most sore throats are caused by viral illnesses and usually get better in 5-7 days.  If you think the pain is not improving at all by 5 days, that's concerning. Doctor can examine: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat illness is bothersome (as in this case), recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Worsening symptoms means seeing a doctor right away.

Sore throat and fever could fit into many diagnostic categories and you require a detailed history, physical exam and lab tests, none of which can be done over the internet.
