Cold: Yes.  Won't make it worse.
Colds generally get better in 7-14 days if you do nothing or 1-2 weeks if you do.

Pharyngitis: Sore throat is inflammation that can be due to numerous causes. To prevent it you must know what is producing it. Sometimes this can happen by breathing in very cold air during the winter by respiring through the mouth rather than the nose.

Two diff things: A polyp is an out-pouching of a mucous membrane, as on your sinus or nasal lining. Phlegm is mucous secreted by mucous cells in response to inflammation or infection. You can have one with or without the other, but they don't change into each other.

The most scientific method of identifying the cause of a sore throat is to have a throat culture at a good laboratory and find out the cause and the sensitivity of the bacteria (if pos. Culture) and treat accordingly.

Keep breathing: A doctor will test someone's airway or breathing tube, by having them talk or say their name. In your case, it doesn't sound like you sustained any major injury. Of course that is a sensitive area, and I would hope your friends would 'fight fair' next time. Better to use 'words' than resorting to this kind of activity. See a doc if it persists or any other worrisome symptoms appear.

You need a scope.: A recurrent sore throat is not uncommon.  If you have more than 6 infections in 1 year it is recommended to remove your tonsils.  Feeling that something is stuck in your throat is uncommon and especially with your history of smoking my suggestion would be to visit and ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) doctor for a look at the back of your throat. I would also suggest to quit smoking.

Get it checked : May be reflux if it occurs more at night however the tonsils need to be examined to exclude an infection here.  Please see a doctor and urgently if breathing or swallowing troubles
