SImple means: With injury to our tissues, inflammation (red, hot, swelling, tenderness) occurs. There is leakage of blood from damaged capillaries and veins which collects under the skin and causes the purple blue coloring we call a bruise. Over time, damaged tissues heal and blood collections are reabsorbed. Protect the area to promote fastest healing. Motrin/advil will help.

Get it checked: 33 year olds don't have sores than don't heal unless something else is wrong. If you were older, skin cancer would be a good bet. Get it looked at.

That's not good: A person in his late 60's usually does not have the fast healing power he had back 40 years ago. Any infection or wound that doesn't follow the expected course of getting better each day, should be checked by the treating doctor or by his primary care doctor. His doctors will look for issues such as wound infection, poor circulation, diabetes, skin cancer, corticosteroid use, etc...

Abscess?: It sounds like you have an abscess that may require drainage, and maybe an antibiotic if quite large, surrounding redness, or fever. There are no reliable home remedies or over-the-counter treatmetns. See a doctor ASAP, and in the meantime do not squeeze or probe it or attempt any treatment yourself.

Shin splints: It sounds like an overuse injury.  Are you a runner?  Shin splints is inflamation of the muscle attachment to your tibia bones.  The other possibility is a stress fracture.  If it has been present for more than 2 weeks you should have it evaluated.
