Foot pain: No it is abnormal;so go get a physical exam and possibly an Xray as well as appropriate therapy/advice based on findings

Pain: Yes your foot can still be sore at times.  But if pain is intense you need to have another x-ray taken and re-evaluation of the fracture site by a podiatrist.  Furether tratment could be indicated.

To comfort: The best person to ask is the doctor treating your fractures. How many weeks since the original injury? Walking too soon could compromise healing. My usual advise to patients is to walk to comfort. Anything casing pain is too much force on the healing fracture.

i think i have done something to my 5th metatarsal, very sore, cannot walk properly. just had an xray & ultrasound - both clear. what could the issue?

Metatarsalgia.: Just because the x-ray and ultrasound are "clear" does not mean the metatarsal is not injured. Aa rather recent injury may not display evidence, especially in stress injuries. If it is hard to walk, then don't do it. If you must use a cam walker boot to help stabilize the area and allow the involved tissues to recover. Rethink the possibility of overuse of the foot causing a metatarsalgia problem.

i have a sore and burning sensation on the bottom of my feet in the metatarsal areas. i can walk well on carpet,  but not so well on hard surfaces.

Metatarsalagia: Several factors may cause metatarsalagia.  As we age the plantar fat pad beneath the metatarsals begin to thin and atrophy. Try gel insoles in your shoes... There is no treatment available other than comfort ..,

Base of the toe: pain near the metatarsal may be the joint capsule bothering you or possible nerve problem. See your podiatrist for treatment.

Need Specialist: A stress fracture in the metatarsal usually heals uneventfully and certainly within a 10 week period. You need to see if the fracture is still present. Bone density test?Seeing a specialist is the right way to go.

About Time.: After 15 weeks of the standard protocol for a stress fracture and it's still swollen and painful, I can guarantee you that three more weeks will not make a difference. You need to have a new set of eyes looking at your fracture. Actually, That would have been even better 5 weeks ago. There are some modalities that can help with the healing.

Possible nonunion: At 13 weeks, consider fracture nonunion. An MRI scan can determine if any healing has occurred.
Reasons for a nonunion may be motion at the fracture or an underlying metabolic issue, such as osteoporosis, hormonal imbalance, or Vitamin D/calcium/magnesium deficiencies.
Further medical evaluation can help determine why the fracture is not healing.
Surgery may be needed depending on which toe it is.

3rd metatarsal stress fracture- 19 weeks boot, crutches. sore, swollen- not healed but exuberant callus. will it heal with boot or try other options?

Accepted Answer

Don't Move.: One very real cause of the "exuberant callus" is lack of, or less than, adequate stability of the fracture site. The movement must be neutralized and use of bone stimulator considered. When all else fails, surgerize.
