No relationship: Drinking alcohol can cause a lot of different problems but swelling of the lymph nodes is not related to alcohol use. You have to ask your doctor to find another cause for the enlarged nodes, if they are really a problem, .

Unlikely: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react. They shrink when all is well.

Hodgkin lymphoma: Lymph node pain from alcohol is a "classic" (but uncommon) symptom in hodgkin's lymphoma. It doesn't prove that any cancer or lymphoma is present, but is worthy of a physician history and physical examination to start.

i am 22 years old i exercise regularly, dont do any drugs. drink on the weeknds but controlled. lymph nodes in my armpits (and only in my armpits) swell and go down regularly, no other symptoms. i took an hiv test 2 weeks ago came out neg. thoughts?

HIV risk?: Have you been at risk for HIV? Unprotected sex with partners at risk? Injection drug use? If not, why are you worried? Your symptoms are not even reomotely suggestive of HIV. Tested 2 weeks after what? If more than a few weeks after last possible exposure, the test result is conclusive. HIV tests ALWAYS are positive if symptoms are caused by HIV. Sounds like nothing to worry about.

See a doctor please: Anything that lasts that long needs to have an evaluation and recommendations for care. I would strongly suggest you make an appointment with a physician asap to rule out any significant problems that could possibly be taken care of easier early then later.

That's a new one!: That is an unusual symptom.  'Course, I've only been a doc for 30 years, and have a lot to learn still!  Maybe another doc on this forum is familiar with this.  It does depend on where the pain is. How do you know that the pain is in your lymph nodes?  Do all types of alcohol do this?  Give a few more details, and we'll have a  better understanding of what's going on and can maybe give better info

LymphadenitisTrismus: Those are the names of what you describe. That is not a diagnosis but just the terms for your symptoms. Various problems in the head and neck can be responsible. Dentally speaking, dental abscesses, wisdom teeth, oral infections of soft tissue spaces, TMJ issues are some of the common ones to blame.

Not likely: Painful lymph nodes is almost never a sign of hodgkins lymphoma, especially without any weight loss or night sweats.  However, i agree with dr. Kittaneh, your should definitely get it checked out.

if had my primary oral herpes outbreak 3 weeks ago but my neck lymph node is still tender and yesterday i had a sore throat that went away by drinking something hot and the lymph node got swollen again is this normal?

Maybe new problem: Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can help decrease throat pain.

See ENT: if after all this time the sore throat has not resolved it would be prudent to see a ear nose and throat specialist. A common etiology of prolonged sore throat include gastroesophageal reflux disease. In the meantime, you might try sleeping with the head of youyour head of bed elevated. Also reducing intake of tomato-based products, citrus and spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol.
