positive i have an umbilical hernia, its been present since last year. its extremely bulged, belly button is pushing outward, extremely hard, sore if i press on it or bump into anything even lightly, constipation. appt aug 5th, but im worried?

i have an umbilical hernia and surgery scheduled in 2 weeks. it is fat and not intestine i was told. i only had the soreness for a week. i feel absolutely fine now if at all feel some itching in the belly button area now and then. do i need surgery?

: It may only be fat now, but any abdominal wall defect in that location could eventually include small intestine. Repairing the defect while you are in stable/good health is a good option. It may never get worse, but if it does your ability to recuperate from a repair if your health changes may be less optimal. You can always cancel the procedure.

a few weeks ago, i felt a sore lump under my skin at my waist line on the right side of my belly button. since then, ive been experiencing burning in my stomach and side. could it be a hernia? i have an appt with a gi doc in aug so i have to wait?

had hernia surgery right at belly button 9 years ago. in the past few days there's a hard knot right at my belly button and very tender. what could cause this????

i had laproscopic hernia surgery in 2005. since then, my belly button has been very tender, painful and has gone black twice. also, i have had stitching protrude to where i have had to cut it back so it won't snag my shirt?

: I assume you had repair of an umbilical hernia. I think you should consult the operating surgeon or another abdominal surgeon for evaluation&amp;advice.  Nonabsorbable sutures and wire mesh are in place but these symptoms raise suspicion that something is amiss 
within the operative site.

Depends: Umbilical hernias are very common.   Constant pain isn't typical of a reducible hernia, but can iccur when incarcerated, meaning it doesn't easily push back in.  An incarcerated hernia can become strangulated if the blood suppy to the herniated tissue is occluded.   If just fat still not generally an emergency, but it is if intestine.  If intestine typically other symptoms to:fever, nausea, emesis

Groin pain: The features of IBS are stool irregularities such as diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, more so cramping in nature, bloating, gas issues, etc. your history is not very suggestive of IBS but perhaps more history and exam is needed to further clarify your symptoms.

You might have: Antibiotic induced bacterial (called c. Difficile) colitis, so you should see your doctor right away.

Maybe: A hernia at the umbilicus with a deep cleft can allow dead skin and lint to accumulate. This can get infected. Just keep it clean with a q tip now and then.

Sure Sounds Like One: What you are describing sounds like an umbilical hernia. If small and w/o symptoms, these may be rx'd conservatively. Otherwise, simple outpatient surgery can fix the problem. I recommend that you see a hernia surgeon.
