Engorgement of tissu: Appears to be the engorgement- enlargement of small areas of breast tissue.As it is closer  to the surface near the nipple you are able to feel. If related to the menstrual cycle,indicates the swelling localized island of breast tissue in response  to hormonal factors of menstrual cycle. this is nothing to worry. Hot compresses /warm soaks may help to reduce pain, if very painful.

Not always: The chances are your condition is secondary to fibrocystic condition. However any lump in the breast requires complete evaluation and work up to rule out a potential malignancy. Ultrasound is an excellent test but it is very dependable on the equipment used and the person performing and interpreting it. You need to have a clinical exam by a breast care provider and may need  imaging studies.

Not likely: Likely you have fibrocystic disease which is a benign condition. You should however cont with monthly exam but also have a doctor do a full exam to possibly include mammo to ensure nothing serious is going on.

If : If you ask this question to 10 different people you will probably get 10 different responses. I recommend that you empower yourself to control that which you can control, and not focus on that which you cannot control. You cannot decided whether or not you develop breast cancer, but unlike many other cancers, you can decide how to fight breast cancer. You have many tools that you can use to fight it. The first one you are already familiar with - the self breast exam. Next you should have a primary care provider who can exam the lump and give you their opinion and recommendations. Then there is mammography, breast ultrasound, and even breast MRI that will allow detection of extremely small cancers. There are excellent surgical treatments, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments. If the lump does turn out to be cancer, the sooner you do something about it the more control you have over your prognosis. Early on you have many options, but if you wait long enough those options will disappear.

Breast feeding: If your are currently breast feeding, this lump could represent an unemptied gland from a clogged milk duct. Apply warm compresses to help dilating the milk duct and gently massage your breast towards the nipple. If that does not help have a gynecologist examine the lump.

Common: During breast feeding some collection of milk in some milk ducts may form a painless lump which eventually disappears. If u remain worried or the lump remains for a long time ( weeks) have urself examined by ur OB-GYN.
