how to absorb more iron after having roux-n-y gastric bypass surgery since iron is absorbed in the beginning of your small intestines, which is bypassed after roux-n-y gastric bypass, where else can it be absorbed enough to keep your iron level up

As : As you correctly states, the duodenum is the most efficient site for absorption of iron, and after roux-en-y gastric bypass, iron absorption and levels decrease.  In women who are menstruating, iron deficiency can be seen in up to 50% of them.  In men, iron deficiency occurs in 20%.  Nevertheless, the remaining small intestine is able to absorb some iron if formulated in an appropriate manner, occasionally infusions of iron are required when severe iron deficiency occurs.  The current recommendations are 40-60 mg/d of iron (as ferrous fumarate or gluconate 320 mg twice a day) with vitamin c (which increase iron absorption) for prevention.  Your levels of iron should be monitored regularly after surgery.

i had gastric bypass surgery can i get a ulcer in the bypassed stomach or just pouch or sm. intestine? i have a jejunal ulcer but pain under left ribs

Yes: i very often recommend taking anti acid the first 6 months after surgery

i had gastric bypass surgery in 2006. i was wondering if it is normal to have green bowel movements. i have them several times a month for like the past year or so. it is most noticeable the week around my period. is this normal?

Interesting: If occurring several times a month, not likely associated with your period (unless it is also occurring several times a month?).  If no other symptoms (pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, weight loss) then reassuring.  Associated with certain foods/beverages (food dyes?).  Might want to keep symptom and food diary to see if link. my brother who is 43 yrs old, had bypass surgery  8 months ago. from last 16 hrs he is feeling abdomen pain. doctor has given 6 injection but no cure.

many possibilities: I'm afraid there's not enough information to offer useful advice. History of bypass indicates that he has vascular disease but may not be related to his current pain. Does he have fever, diarrhea, vomiting, tenderness, loss of appetite? Considerations include gastritis, acid reflux, gall stones, appendicitis, peptic ulcer disease, infections, and many other possibilities. Good luck.

i had small sliding hiatal hernia 4/12. 3/27/13 i was hit from behind in car accident with seatbelt on  4/2/13 had gastric bypass surgery; found large paraesophageal hernia.can the accident cause this?

Hiatal hernia: It is possible that the accident can cause this.  However, one can have a spontaneous hernia as well.  I would make your surgeon aware and have your surgeon follow this closely.

Need exam: This means you need to have an exam.  Blood clots are not likely related to the gastric bypass.  This may be related to hemorrhoids but may also be related to a host of other things in your GI tract some of which could be serious.  You should talk to your local doctor.

Immobilize/Magnify: Surgeons use magnifying glasses to a enlarge the coronaries that are very small.  The coronaries are immobilized using either a special device (beating heart surgery) or stopping the heart altogether (on bypass).

Yes: Many people have had more than 1 bypass surgery.  Fortunately, the surgery is very durable, and if there are problems years later, the treatment is often medication or stenting rather than re-do surgery.

Various factors: Depends upon the type, site and number of blockages and the also the heart pump function.  Also depends on whether or not medical therapy has improved your symptoms and the degree of functional limitation you are experiencing.  A detailed discussion with your cardiologist after your coronary angiogram  is the best way to proceed.

Bypass surgery: Your cardiothoracic surgeon needs to review with you your specific risks heading into surgery. Smoking and COPD are additional risk factors for recovery post-operatively. Your surgeon will make sure that a pulmonologist will follow with him once the surgery is completed. You should be making plans to cease smoking forever given your need for bypass surgery.
