Most are asympt.: small HHs areanatomic findings on GI styudies. It is only if the so calledesophagael sphincter in incompetent ant there is reflux do you have problems.See GI for esophagael manometry if concerned

GERD: Patients react to gerd and symptoms of hiatal hernia in different ways.  Anxiety is generally not a symptom but esophageal spasm from the acid or tiny bits of acid aspirated into the airways could give the sensation of anxiety.  I would recommend a history and physical examination by primary care physician in a trial of a proton pump inhibitor. If the anxiety persists after this medication trial then it may be a separate issue.

It happens: Omeprazole works well for many patients with reflux and small hiatal hernias. In some cases it is not enough and additional treatment, or even surgery may be needed. Be certain to keep a log of the frequency, timing, position, relation to meals and severity of your symptoms. This will help your doctor to help you.

Hiatal hernia: It is possible that the accident can cause this.  However, one can have a spontaneous hernia as well.  I would make your surgeon aware and have your surgeon follow this closely.

Clear it: with your physician first. Isolated leg and arm muscle exercises should be OK, but avoid clean and jerks, power lifts or any lifts that involve the abdominal muscles or stress the core. The pressure could strangulate your intestine and put you in the hospital.

: Depending on how large the opening is in the diaphagm (the "hiatal hernia" opening) any abdominal pressure or compression of abdominal contents can enlarge the hernia.  Get a referral to a general surgeon to determine whether remedial surgery may be necessary.

One option: Alexis, surgery is an option, however you must weigh the risks and potential complications of undergoing surgery before proceeding. A 2cm hiatal hernia can certainly cause problems with eating, you certainly need to rule out other GI issues before having an operation that is irreversible. Continue working with your GI doctor, or ask for a referral to an esophageal specialist first to be sure.

can a hiatal hernia disappear? i had an endoscopy over a year ago and a small 1 cm hiatal hernia was discovered. recently i underwent another one and they said there was no hiatal hernia detected at all. can they heal themselves?

: 1cm is pretty small and may have not been visualized if it reduced itself during the second endo. Tho anything is possible in medicine most of the time there is no self- healing if a hernia
