How about what are: the Con's to using nitrazepam as a sleep medication?  It is a benzodiazapine. You can develop a tolerance to this class of medications. This is NOT a HEALTHY choice for a sleep aid.

Most have same med: Generally, the otc sleep meds tend to include Diphenhydramine as their active agent ( otherwise known as benedryl) grogginess is its working side effect in most.There seems to be little benefit of any particular one over another. Some herbal preparations use meletonin with variable sucess. You might consider some simple cardio exercise (half hour) & a relaxing tub soak as a healthier alternative.

Melatonin: I like to start with suggesting melatonin.  It is a natural, over the counter supplement that we use in children to help with sleep when taking stimulants for adhd.  Take about 30 minutes prior to getting in the bed.  We've had great results!

Any one: There is only one type of glaucoma that can be worsened with over the counter sleep aids... A rare type called narrow angle glaucoma. More common forms of glaucoma are not affected by meds. But the bigger question is why you're taking sleep aids to begin with? Bad idea! in the long run, they will not help you. Better to seek help to diagnose the cause of your sleep disturbance. Sleep meds: Many are habit forming. Need to see physician and work out a course of treatment consider sleep study to determine if underlying problem interferes with your ability to sleep. Important to use sleep inducing environment eliminate noise no television etc to stimulate you. There are better options. Relaxation techniques etc.

Sleep and adhd: First make sure you do not give meds after 4pm, make sure the child exercises at least one hour a day outside. Some children respond to melatonin or Tenex (guanfacine) at night. Please be aware sleep disorders are common with adhd.  Also check if child snores as some have found improvement after adenoidectomy.

Research: Doctors in general ared "sold" on a medication unless there are controlled trials that show us a clear difference between a medication and a "placebo" or sugar pill.  Pharmaceutical company supply us with some of the research, but they also can answer questions on research about side effect rates and other things through their medical departments.
