How about what are: the Con's to using nitrazepam as a sleep medication?  It is a benzodiazapine. You can develop a tolerance to this class of medications. This is NOT a HEALTHY choice for a sleep aid.

Important to use sleep inducing environment eliminate noise no television etc to stimulate you. There are better options. Relaxation techniques etc.

Research: Doctors in general ared "sold" on a medication unless there are controlled trials that show us a clear difference between a medication and a "placebo" or sugar pill.  Pharmaceutical company supply us with some of the research, but they also can answer questions on research about side effect rates and other things through their medical departments.

Not good: But sometimes necessary. When young insomnia is a sign of overall poor health but in the declining years it is a problem associated with aging.

Most have same med: Generally, the otc sleep meds tend to include Diphenhydramine as their active agent ( otherwise known as benedryl) grogginess is its working side effect in most.There seems to be little benefit of any particular one over another. Some herbal preparations use meletonin with variable sucess. You might consider some simple cardio exercise (half hour) & a relaxing tub soak as a healthier alternative.

Hypnotic medications: It is difficult to determine what is considered to be "overdose" as all of us metabolize medications at different rates. Overdose in the truest meaning would be ingesting an amount of a medication that leads to significant acute adverse effects necessitating a hospital admission. Taking more than the recommended highest dosage would be an indication of substance dependency/tolerance. Speak to md.

Melatonin: I like to start with suggesting melatonin.  It is a natural, over the counter supplement that we use in children to help with sleep when taking stimulants for adhd.  Take about 30 minutes prior to getting in the bed.  We've had great results!

Variable: While the onset of action of Diphenhydramine (active ingredient in zzzquil) is less than 10 minutes, the peak effect is more like 60-90 minutes.
