Sleep studies: The study evaluates the rate and rhythm of the heart continuously along with the level of blood oxygenation during the study. During disturbed, ineffective, or complete lack of breathing (and oxygenation) may occur. So a score is tabulated to indicate severity of the airway problems and lack of oxygen as well as the amount and time of them. An eeg can be used to capture brain electrical problems.

used cpap last night in lab, 1st time. had major issues breathing with mask unless my head was elevated. sleep tech seemed surprised. is this normal?

It can be: occasionally the use of CPAP can initially be difficult until you get use to it.  The pressure in the nose and respiratory tree can feel smothery.  With time and relaxation you should be able to tolerate the CPAP much better.

tachycardia only an hour after sleep. ep said it is reentry tach or pots. i am wondering if it is my adrenals. what labs do i need to ask for? thanks

?Adrenal deficiency: Your doctor will know this answer. If  you are worried about checking adrenal insufficiency, tests like random cortisol, AM cortisol or 24 hour cortisol can be ordered. Urine or serum metanephrines are initial tests for phaeochromocytoma.

Maybe: If you have not seen a cardiologist, you should make an appointment to do so as soon as possible.  Many things need to be looked into--including 24 hour monitoring to verify heart rate and pattern.  You said tests were normal--but did not say what tests were done.
Caffeine may be an issue; thyroid may need to be checked.  See a cardiologist.  Good luck.

See below: If the disease is considered active,  the inflammatory molecules such il-6 can mediate fatigue by anemia, cause pain due to swelling, and make you feel unwell.  When you get rid of the inflammation, people tend to feel better.

Varies case by case: A sleep-lab overnight study gathers lots of information, but is very expensive, and tests the patient outside of his normal routine. The home sleep study collects basic information, but is much cheaper, so can be done on many more people, plus it tests patients in their own beds. The decision is made case by case, but sometimes the cheaper study is done first, to see if it alone gives enough info.

: Check normal values for women your age who live where you live. Cause can include dehydration, smoking,  COPD, repeat first without overnight fasting.

No: Excessive sleepiness by day. Often it is the spouse that spots the apneas but many people do not have any idea that they have sleep apnea. I have become pretty certain that the underlying cause is bad diet. See my blog "oxygen, the spark of life" that you can google.

i have stage 4 emphasema and nonischemic cardiomyopathy. i am worn out all the time even after a good niter sleep.  is this from copd? all labs r good

Accepted Answer

Most likely: Work of breathing, i.e., the energy spent to breath in people with COPD is high. On top of this, your cardiomyopathy does not help to push blood through and oxygenize then sensed by your body to even try harder. You may just need a medicine to decrease the sensation of dyspnea and you may feel better. Talk to your lung specialist.
