Trazodone doesn't: usually act this way.  It typically takes longer to act, and puts people out longer, with a longer hang over the next morning than Elavil (amitriptyline) or other sleep aids.   Elavil (amitriptyline) is another antidepressant in this class, but has a bad reputation for side effects, mostly weight gain (not so for Trazodone).   Check with your MD for dosages and also for alternative sleepers...

Short term: This is a drug with a peak from 2-4 hours after taking it.  if it took days or accumulated in your body, then you would be sleepy all the time.  You need to take it each night if you have a sleep problem.

Yes: The major issue with trying to stop using trazodone for sleep is an intensification of sleeping difficulties as opposed any common withdrawal syndrome. Depending on the current dose it may be reasonable to decrease the dose by 25 to 50 mgs each week allowing your body to adjust in between each dose change.  You should always speak with the prescribing physician before stopping any medication.

Yes but ask your MD: It should be OK. You sound like you do not have a high enough dose.

Not cold turkey: I would consult a sleep specialist that can help monitor your med reduction but also give you some behavioral treatment that can help you come off of the medication and still have functional sleep patterns.

Having said that in some cases is used together - but safer under your doctor's supervision rather than via this forum so please ask him/her.

Don't know what the: Underlying sleep problem was - but if this is still an issue than the issues falling asleep are understandable. How good is your sleep hygiene?  1. Keep regular bed ; wakening time (includes weekends). Get up same time daily. 
2. Make a regular, relaxing bedtime routine: warm bath or shower, aromatherapy, reading, or listening to gentle music. 
3. Sleep in dark, quiet, cool room w comfortable &gt;.

Short term only: Used alot in elderly  nursing homes, not particularly good for more than a few days, less rem sleep, but cheap.

Technically not: But it is often used off label for sleep and works very well in many patients for sleep. It is fda approved as an antidepressant.
