The : The answer to your question depends on the type of irregular heart beat. The sensation of a skipped heart beat is most commonly caused by premature ventricular contractions (pvcs) or premature atrial contractions (pacs). Neither of these conditions are dangerous, but in some circumstances they can be associated with other heart conditions. A sustained irregular heart beat lasting hours or longer is usually atrial fibrillation, a common arrhythmia with several potential complications.

I would recommend that you talk with your doctor if you are having this symptom, because the first step is an accurate diagnosis. Depending on what is found, you may need nothing done but you may benefit from treatment.

Extra heart beats: from the bottom of the heart (PVC's) frequently cause a sensation in the chest resulting in cough. I don't think indigestion will cause these symptoms.

Are these post: Menopausal estrogen replacements or birth control pills? "skipped beats" require an ekg or holter to distinguish origin, and anxiety and stress levels may influence, but i would want to make sure your heart conduction system is in good working order.

I would try to see if there is a trend or pattern
cut down on coffee and other stimulants
monitor your pulse

Palpitation Sx: Palpitations are an awareness of extra heartbeats which most of us have. The sensation can be single or multiple and can sometimes last minutes. Different people may feel other symptoms along with them such as dizzy, lightheaded or short of breath. The palpitations are almost always atrial or ventricular premature beats. Usually benign but they are also found with abnormal hearts.

Vaginal? Abdominal?: In almost all cases you should get a heart-beat with  vaginal ultrasound early in the 6th week. Abdominal ultrasound won't get a  heartbeat until at least 8 weeks in thin women, and can be much later. Good wishes.

A stressor: These things are stressors on the heart and may precipitate arrhythmia . If you have an underlying rhythm problem this will make it "come out" . Heat , fever, cold, hypoglycemia etc.

Caffeine: Caffeine can be a rhythm irritant. In general a single cup of coffee isn't enough to cause a problem. There could be an individual with an unusual increased sensitivity however. Why not drink decaffeinated coffee, it tastes much the same and has almost no caffeine.

went to the er last night for chest pains. my potassium level was 2.9. ekg showed a skip in my heart beat. is that dangerous at 2.9?

Electrolytes: Electrolyte imbalances are common. Better measure of true potassium and magnesium is testing RBC not serum levels. Magnesium, potassium, and taurine can help stabilize cells. Just keep things in balance and do not overdo anything. Drink lots of water and eat lots of organic vegetables.
