Sun, hormones, meds: Most common causes of increased pigmentation are sun exposure, hormones (ie: pregnancy, fertility treatments, oral contraceptives, hormonal replacement therapy), and medications (ie: minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline, sulfa drugs) or combination thereof. Certain diseases associated with hormonal imbalance such as addison's or cushing's can also cause excess pigment.

Tiniaversicolor: There is a type of very mild fungal skin infection called tinia versicolor. It causes patchy loss of pigment mostly on the trunk. It may be slightly flaky. It is easily treated with topical treatment such as selsun blue. Also topical and oral anti-fungal treatment. Your pcp should be able to treat this.

Please see your local dermatologist and/or plastic surgeon to discuss these options!

Systemic lupus can be associated with other autoimmune disorders such as vitiligo (depigmentation disorder).
