For depression/sleep: Doxepin (brand name sinequan) is an older prescription antidepressant (a "tricyclic" available generically) that is mostly used nowadays as a sleep aid.  It also has anxiety-relieving effects.  Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation, but unlike many other prescription sleep aids, it is non-addictive.

d'xd fibro&cfs.years of misdiagnoses. on wellbutrin, lamictal, klonopin, topamax, vyvanse, seroquel, adderall, duexis, doxepin, butrans & percocet. too much @ 34 y/o how can i wean off these medications & what's best with my new diagnosis. i work f/t?

Polypharmacy: I am sorry for your misdiagnoses. You are on too many medicines including some that have similar indications. Your situation is quite complex. I would seek out a caring family doctor who can do a detailed psychological intake including the Beck's Depression inventory, the Beck's Anxiety scale, the Hirschfeld questionnaire for a mood disorder, and an Adult ADD inventory.  Medicines could be tapered

Antidepressant.: Doxepin HCL belong to a class of antidepressants called Tricyclics. Some of the side-effects include dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness or sedation, hypotension, dizziness, difficulty initiating the urinary stream, depression, suicidal thoughts and weight gain.

Paxil/Sinequan: Both are antidepressants.  Both are sedating. Paxil (paroxetine) is ssri, Doxepin is cyclic antidepressant.

Symbiax is combination of Prozac & zyprexa, (olanzapine) used for depression with psychotic features, and is very sedating & causes weight gain.

TCA vs neuroleptic: Sinequan is the brand name for doxepin, available generically for many years.  It's a very sedating tricyclic antidepressant, now used mostly as a sleep aid.  Seroquel is the brand name for quetiapine, available generically in the us since march 2012.  An antipsychotic & mood stabilizer, it's also quite sedating.  However, seroquel's potential medical risks argue against using it for sleep alone.

what is difference doxepin (silenor) & (sinequan)?   what is dosage for insomnia for both types?  why both called  doxepin?  seem very different.

Doxepin = generic : Silenor and sinequan are both doxepin, the generic name for the medication.  The only difference is the dosages.  Silenor comes in 3 and 6mg strengths, but sinequan's smallest dose increment is 10mg -- and it's a capsule which can't be cut in half.  Sinequan is fda-indicated for depression, not insomnia. Prescribing sinequan for sleep is an "off label" use; giving silenor is an indicated use.

i am 78, have been on sinequan for 27y. and very slowly decreased the dose until i was off it. since then (2 months) im always cold, and when moving i sweat. have to urinate every 30 min at night, and have days with difficulty breathing. withdrawl?

MAY JUST NEED TIME: Need to know the dose and how you did the taper. Your body may just need time to be use to being off the Sinequan.
