It can: Reflux in infants is a common trigger for a cough. The Prilosec decreases stomach acid and may decrease irritation, but it does not stop the reflux, it just makes it less painful. With time and gradual assumption of an upright posture for more hours/day, the reflux and related cough decreases. It iften peaks around the 4-5 month period.

Varies: Silent reflux is a condition in which the infant has gastresophageal reflux with symptoms such as fussiness, coughing or wheezing without obvious reflux signs such as spitting. Usually we use medications like Zantac (ranitidine) or proton pump inhibitors like Prevacid in infants if we need to treat reflux with medication.

hi, my baby is almost 6 months and on nan optipro. he has flem and silent reflux.  can the formula cause the flem? he uses infant gavoscon for the relux but it seems he has more flem then. if i change formula which would be the best?

6 Months routine : You could ask these questions at your next routine visit with your paediatrician.  Milk causing phlegm is a myth.  Reflux is a normal physiological process that is eventually outgrown and only needs treatment if the infant has complications or is not growing well.  Change in formula should be discussed with your paediatrician.

Reflux: Change the milk, Switch to formula specific for reflux such as Novolac AR, Nan AR. Did you have caeserean section? Risk then higher for vertebrae that is out of place. Thoracic vertebrae T7 causes reflux. Thus it might help taking your infant to the Chiropracter.

Reflux: Do not do anything without your doctor instructing you to do so. I assume your have seen the pediatrician - perhaps a visit to a pediatric GI specialist may help. The reflux has to be evaluated.

Infants all do and it seems to increase a bit and peak naturally around 4m as they get stronger & generate more abdominal pressure with rolling & flexing. As long as they have no heartburn or other troublesome symptoms (barfing thru nose, wt loss) they grow out of it over time. Meds can help with symptoms.

Symptoms: Acid reflux is actually part of every day life for all of us.Infants often peak in their symptoms around 3-5 mo and become less so as the begin to sit/stand/walk. The fact that they are not laying down begins to decrease their reflux symptom intensity . Most come off acid reducers gradually but may revisit the issue occasionally in childhood or their teens. Diet & behavior have a lot of impact.

Talk with your doc.: If a young baby cries as if in pain after eating - or if she cries in pain when you put her down, she may be having reflux. In reflux, food (i.e., breast milk or formula) sloshes up from the stomach into the esophagus. But it can be hard to know. So do talk with your baby's health care provider. In the meantime, hold her upright (sitting up or inclined) after eating and see if this helps.

Thicken formula: If child is formula fed then you can try a formula designed for reflux, such as enfamil ar or similac spitup. You could also just add rice cereal to the existing formula (i usually don't recommend this under a month of age.) try keeping child upright for 30-45 minutes after eating.
