i think my baby of almost 11 weeks has oral thrush. he is exclusively breastfed. i don't see any signs of thrush on my breasts. how do i know and how urgently do i need to get him to a doctor?

Thrush not occult: Oral thrush is always obvious for al to see, never hidden. If your baby had it you’d bathe first to know.just chill!

Infection/crack: Any infection /skin crack may cause this type of pain.Get checked by your pcp.

Fungal infection: Discuss with your doctor. May have superinfection by bacteria as well. Wash twice daily keep dry and  consider washing with Hibiclens ( discuss with doc)

Breast pump: If your concerned about the baby getting the thrush you can still pump and get milk.

If you don't stimulate your breast your milk supply will dwindle.

You : You should definitely keep breastfeeding your baby.

Thrush is an overgrowth of a fungus called candida in the mouth and is extremely common in infants.  It is treated by applying an anti-fungal medication, such as nystatin, to the baby's mouth until the white plaques on the inside of the cheeks and tongue disappear.

If your nipples are red, sore, cracking and bleeding, then chances are your nipples are infected with candida and you and your baby may be passing it back and forth.  If this is the case, call your doctor about using an antifungal ointment while your baby is being treated on his anti-fungal drops.

Some babies with thrush will also develop diaper rashes from the overgrowth of candida.  Frequent diaper changes and the use of antifungal cream in the diaper area can help prevent/treat this problem.  Good luck!

my 2 month old daughter has thrush. i have noticed i have about a half a dozen dry reddish odd shaped spots on and around my breast. is that related?

Yes, it is possible: I often have nursing mothers treat their nipple areas with Nystatin  or lotrimin (clotrimazole) cream as their infants are treated with the oral solution for thrush.  It would be a good idea to have your doctor take a look and see it you need treatment.

i have had a baby 6 weeks ago and got sent back to hospital with thrush in my breasts. thrush has gone but still have burning in breasts and when i let down it hurts a little.  what could it be?

Mastitis: You might still have an infection (either bacterial or fungal) of your mammary glands. I definitely recommend seeking consult from your ob/gyn or primary care provider for  exam and opinion.

i'm breast feeding, my tyne thinks i have thrush and prescribed betadine douche. can i use it while breast feeding and will it help the thrush?

Yes, you can: There's no problem using betadine douche while breastfeeding. If it helps, great. If you still have symptoms, be sure and ask your gyn again to consider a prescription medication.
