Fluoride: Fluoride is usually found naturally in low concentration in drinking water and foods. The concentration in seawater averages 1.3 parts per million (ppm). Fresh water supplies generally contain between 0.01–0.3 ppm, whereas the ocean contains between 1.2 and 1.5 ppm. In some locations, the fresh water contains dangerously high levels of fluoride, leading to serious health problems.

Not reported: Fluoride is an essential element needed for healthy bone & teeth development.In areas where groundwater has high levels, a mottled staining of teeth is common and some bony changes are reported. Growth delay has not been a listed effect. Acute injestion ( eating multiple tubes of fluoridated toothpaste) can lead to a variety of problems including death.

No: I have seen no study linking Fluoride to cancer. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral like calcium. Like other minerals taken in excess it is toxic. The toxic levels are well beyond any normal use.

is it ever okay for children to use mouthwash? i've heard conflicting things about children using mouthwash because they might get too much fluoride. is this true? is there even any point in using mouthwash that doesn't have fluoride in it?

There : There are specific mouthwashes for children that are excellent (act).  Most have fluoride.  This is not harmful as topical Fluoride is not an overdose issue as long as its not swallowed-it is the ingested fluoride, either in drinking water or in vitamins that can cause spotting in the enamel.  It's probably a good idea, especially for a cavity prone child to use these rinses.

Fluorosis: Excess fluoride in the drinking water while the teeth are forming can cause mottling of the enamel (dark brown staining) that can appear like tooth decay. If his teeth are truly severely decayed, he should have them restored.

Few dentists accept the challenge of such cases, realizing that attempts are typically futile and, in some cases, may create a more unacceptable appearance than the pre-treatment condition.

Your : Your child should spit out any excessive tooth paste after brushing to limit ingestion.  Do not refill the toothpaste while brusing and limit the tooth paste to approximately the size of a pea. Topical fluorides, such as toothpastes, are a very effective method of clinical remineralization early onset decay.
