Various: Levofloxacin(levoquin) like most antibiotics has many potential side effects although most patients tolerate them without problems.  Nausia, vomiting and diarrhea are among the most common side effects.  Allergic reactions occur occasionally.  Clostridium difficile colitis occurs. Rarely elderly or immunocompromised patients can develop tendonitis or tendon rupture especially the achilles tendon.

AT THAT DOSE: I can not think about many non potentially fatal conditions for which to take that high of a dose, for longer than 5 days or so. I would request info on why that specific antibiotic, at that particular dose.

Levaquin (levofloxacin) side effect: Most side effects are short lived and go away when you stop the medication.  Most likely side effects would be upset stomach or diarhea from the change of the bowel flora (the bacteria in the gut).  Good luck, hope you feel better.

took 20 days of levaquin in nov, in january started having cramps, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite ever since. can side effects of levaquin last that long? tested negative for c diff ?

: The Levaquin probably is not the cause. Too much time passed from when you took it and onset of your cramps etc several weeks later; and that sort of problem (without C diff) would not last this long. See a doctor about this. Good luck.

are you aware of the devastating side effects of floroquinolones, levaquin, cipro, (ciprofloxacin) etc. why aren't patients warned of this?

Quinolones: I'm not sure what you mean by "the devastating side effects of fluoroquinolones". I have prescribed many, many, many doses myself to children and adolescents and they are overall safe. It is known that they can cause a reversible arthropathy and it is also known, and warned about every time I prescribe it, that they can cause tendonitis and tendon rupture rarely. Your doctor should mention this.

female 77 taking 3mg prednisone for rheumatoid arthritis and now has to take levaquin for cellulitis infection of foot and leg would taking the prednisone increase risks of side effects from levaquin. should prednisone be stopped? or does it help?

Accepted Answer

: 3 mgs of prednisone is a very low dose and ,in my opinion, has little impact on the immune system's ability to interfere with levaquin's potential side effects or it's efficacy against the bacteria causing cellulitis. I don't recommend stopping the prednisone. You may ask your physician or rheumatologist if he/she agrees.

Minor, major: Minor side effects of Levaquin (levofloxacin) include stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, rash.  Major side effect of Levaquin (levofloxacin) is tendon rupture - which can happen up to months after stopping the medicine.  As a precaution, i recommend not doing any jumping sports while on the med (basketball, soccer, football, trampoline).  This is a black box warning and doc should counsel you about risks.

Little risk or worry: Levoflocaxin (Levaquin) is a very safe drug; dangerous side effects are rare. In the very unlikely event of something serious, it could start within an hour of the first dose or several weeks later. But you really shouldn't be worried. Undoubtedly the infection being treated is a lot more dangerous than the antibiotic.
