Doubtful: Children in day care facilities are being exposed to each and every virus that their playmates are carrying and this actually provides them with progressive stimulation and activation of immune processes. If you really feel that there is something seriously wrong your pediatrician can easily evaluate for specific immune defects, but really doubt that these are present. Best wishes.

my almost 2 year old is constantly sick.he's in daycare.he takes a multivitamin and probiotic daily.he gets a post nasal drip, coug and quickly worsen?

It happens: The average 2 yo in day care is expected to get 5-7 URI's/yr to age 5. Home care drops it a little, but rarely if their are siblings in school. By 5 the frequency drops to 3/yr after they develop some of their own immunity.

my 2 year old has the 3rd episode of 101 fever and vomiting in a month and a half. seems fine in between episodes. says belly hurts occasionally. dr keeps saying its a virus but no other kids in daycare

Some basics: Fever &amp; vomiting are classic symptoms of dozens of gut viruses that are common at that age. Kids need not have symptoms to be infected &amp; pass them on.Day care attendance doubles infection rate in early childhood. Three in 6  wks is a bit unusual but not indicative of a worrisome process. It would be seen more in kids new to that day care setting.

is it true that kids attending daycare are sick more often than those who are not?

Yes: Typically yes (but not always!) most children exposed to other young children in daycare are more likely to get colds and other common childhood illnesses. This is simply because there are more individuals around to share germs. In the long run, exposure to common childhood illnesses early on is beneficial to the immune system, and most "daycare" babies end up being healthy children later on.

is it normal for my baby to get sick from other kids in daycare?

Yes: For the first 6 months of daycare, children do tend to catch many colds. It's inevitable and yes, a normal part of being in daycare. It is merely a function of being exposed to many other children who will unknowingly spread viruses before they become sick themselves. Be proactive by making sure your baby is eating and sleeping well and is up to date on all his immunizations.

Echinacea and soap: Daycare workers get sick all the time. Hazard of the trade. However, an herbal supplement such as echinacea or airborne can help some with preventing viral infections. Best defense? Washing hands, not touching eyes and nose after touching surfaces or children, and changing shirts periodically though the day. And getting a flu shot!

my 3.5 y.o daughter has now gotten sick in the early morning hours 2 days, but 5 days apart. both times she has thrown up the prior days lunch, but not the prior days dinner. shouldn't lunch have been digested? should we ask daycare what lunch was?

: Food poisoning, allergic reaction or food intolerance are possible causes. Washing hands prior to food handling is recommended. Monitor fever, hydration and screen for COVID 19. Watch for diarrhea, dehydration and development of other symptoms. Please follow up with your Pediatrician.

my child was exposed to diarrhea at daycare; will she get sick?

Probably!: The vomiting and diarrhea illnesses of the winter are mostly viral and are very contagious.  In fact they can live on surfaces for up to six months! gross, huh? There is a good chance your child will get it.  Once the exposure has happened there is not much you can do.  Expect a 24 to 72 hour incubation period, and cross your fingers. Keep washing your hands, because you may get it too!

can you only get meningitis if the person you're around has it? two kids sneezed in my face/around me at daycare but hes not sick..should i worry?

Many other ways: Meningitis can be caused by infections transmitted by human contact (eg. Meningococcal or pneumococcal meningitis), others can be spread by mosquitoes (eg. West nile, eastern equine encephalitis), or are the result of the reactivation of an past infection (like herpes meningitis). Unless you start to get a fever, headache and neck stiffness or pain when you nod your head, don't worry.

what vitamins can i give  21m old to prevent sickness/ help build immune system? she has started daycare and seems to be sick all the time.

Doesn't help: Supplements or vitamins would only be helpful if the kid was deficient in their diet.They do not "boost" anything &amp; end up in their urine within a day.The average preschool kid will have 5-7 URI's &amp; 2-3 episodes of diarrhea/yr. After an initial break in period, they often settle into less frequent illness. Home solo care cuts the numbers some but not by much.
