Nothing: There's no food or other easy intervention that will change your skin color.  Further, i'd urge you to accept your body as it is, rather than let someone make you think this is something you need to, or should try to do.  The whole world made fun of michael jackson for changing his natural color.  It's almost certain you'll find someone who loves you & thinks your skin color is just perfect now.

Accepted Answer

Shame and guilt: Are similar, but i think of shame as feeling bad about who your are and guilt as feeling bad about something you've done or failed to do.  In general, it is less harmful to feel guilty about a behavior because you can change your behavior more easily than who you are.  Labeling yourself with negative terms such as stupid, lazy, ugly, etc. May feel permanent and unchangeable.

You can't: No one can replace your family. But you can surround yourself with positive people. Maybe going to a church or a community center or a support group in your community would help. Or you might want to consider talking to a counselor about how you are feeling. Being shunned hurts.  You shouldn't be alone with those feelings.

Shame: Shame is a ubiquitous human emotion.  According to brene brown phd, it is "the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing we are flawed and therefore unworthy of acceptance and belonging."  understanding & caring for ourselves helps lessen the impact of this feeling when it arises.  A great book to read: "i thought it was just me (but it isn't)" -- by brene brown phd.

Diet and muscle mass: To gain weight you have to consume more calories than you are burning. Do this in a healthy way though. Don't choose junk or fast food. Keep a well balanced diet and make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need. Don't cut out exercise as it is very good for you. Weight lifting and other muscle building exercises can help you increase your body mass.

You must have: Experienced some strong punitive disciplining growing up. Even though you are now grown you regress to feeling like a child caught doing something wrong, even if you have done nothing warranting the feelings of guilt and shame. Consider speaking with a therapist to get beyond this.

Test for asthma.: This could be indicative of "exercise-induced asthma", or "cold-induced asthma" if you're jogging in the cold. Asthma can present as a cough. This can be investigated and tested.

Talk to therapist: In my experience, on some level we all really know why we do certain things. Sometimes it's hard to figure it out.  Sometimes you don't really need to figure out why, but just need to learn a new pattern of behavior or way of thinking about things. A trained psychologist or therapist can really help.
