Buoyancy of water: Will help to make exercise easier by lessening the stress on the joints and soft tissues.  Just like an injured runner may simulate running in the swimming pool until he recovers.  Just be easy with your swim strokes and don't over do it so that you don't reinjure or worsen your shoulder.

shoulder has been cracking for a 1yr with mild pain. last few months severe pain and cant crack it with limited movement. a few nights ago feels it popped back with a crack & hurt a lot. moves well now but still sore. will it heal on its own?

: Symptoms lasting over a year and apparently worsening indicates that you need to have a medical examination and possibly imaging or physical therapy.  Make an appointment with your doctor for a full evaluation. Good luck!

More info needed: If there is no history of sprain or other injury, you may have tendonitis of the shoulder. Arthritis of the shoulder joint is another possibility. Treatment consists of taking anti-inflammatory medications like Advil or Aleve (naproxen) and avoiding stress on the shoulder joint. If symptoms persist consult an orthopedic specialist for diagnosis and treatment.

Could it be frozen?: Adhesive capsulitis, or frozen shoulder, isn't uncommon in women in your age group. It limits your range of motion and makes sleeping miserable! (does this sound like the voice of experience?!) see your doctor to be sure of the diagnosis, though. Shoulder pain can also be a heart symptom, though not likely to limit movement. See a doc: While this could be muscular in nature, it sounds more like a cervical outlet issue that could be disc, degenerative compression of nerve or cord. Appropriate neurological exam and testing MRI, EMG/NCS should provide an exact diagnosis. Then a helpful treatment plan will be generated. In the meantime be certain your neck is supported well during sleep by a small bolster that distracts and supports

Possibly: Only with some specific motion tests and an MRI will you know for sure.  If the symptoms are limiting what you have to do (not what you want to do) it is probably worthwhile having it checked by an orthopaedist.

Need MRI.: You could have torn your labrum. See a sports medicine orthopedist to get an MRI.
