i am currently on amoxicillin and my son just came home from school with the flu. can i still catch his sickness?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Amoxicillin gives you no degree of protection from any viral illness, including the flu. If the kid tested flu positive, tamiflu (oseltamivir)  taken once daily can prevent you from developing symptoms. If you just assume it is the flu, tamiflu (oseltamivir) may or may not help.

what else can i do for a 3 month old who has the flu besides amoxicillin?

Depends on situation: Amoxicillin will do nothing for the flu. If there is a co-infection it may help with that. We have some guidelines for tamiflu (oseltamivir) down to 2 weeks of age but it must be started within the first 48 hrs to be any help and is usually reserved for hospitalized cases.

hi i currently have the flu and i'm on amoxicillin for an infected toe nail i have been coughing quite violently, i just wondering can any of these factors cause pin point pupil because i've noticed my pupils look smaller?

: Pin point means VERY small. Google pictures of them and compare. Review meds u may be taking about effects on pupil size.

my 4yr old, 33lb daughter has the flu and an ear infection was prescribed amoxicillin 400mg/5ml with a dosage of 9ml twice a day. is this too high of a dosage?

: Not particularly. Dosing is based on the type of infection and frequency of resistant strains. For an ear infection at that age 90mg/kg/d in 2 divided doses. That would calculate to 8.5 ml twice a day but 9 would be fine. The common germ for that is pneumococcus with some potential for resistance. It does seem like a lot, but I consider this the standard of care.

was diagnosed w infected lymph nodes after having the flu. i've been on amoxicillin-clav for 5 days. i still have pain on my left side fr behind my ear to my neck...  could the er doctor be correct on his diagnosis?

No: Amoxil (amoxicillin) is an antibiotic that is only effective at treating bacterial infections.  Influenza is a virus and no antibiotic will treat viruses.

See a doctor ASAP: If you really have influenza you should not have been treated with antibiotics as they are not only worthless, but potentially dangerous. Your symptoms now suggest the possibility that you have involvement of your lungs and any time your are short of air this is a potential medical emergency. Go to a doctor or an er now before this becomes more severe.  Good luck.

Vaccine and anti: Viral medication. Anti-virall medications, requiring prescription, can shorten the illness by a couple of days if started early. Best thing to do is to get vaccinated to prevent flu. See this site for more info.
