Muscle pain : Myofascial trigger points are areas of intense spasm that occur in muscles that are stressed and dysfunctional. They can refer pain to other areas and can be confused with "pinched nerves "

hey i just got a sharp shooting pain up my neck to the top of my head. was quite painful and just lasted a few seconds. should i be overly concerned?

Accepted Answer

Probably not: This happens not infrequently when nerves that exit the small foramina in the spine are 'bumped' sending quite a jolt down the respective nerves: usually the greater or lesser occipital nerves which will reach the top the head matching your description. In short this happens and is usually self-limiting and not a cause for concern. If it happens repeatedly then I you should seek medical attention.

getting headaches on/off for days.shooting pain up my neck and today pressing the left side is sore.no fever. what could itbe?might have fibromyalgia

Head pain: It is very common to have scalp tenderness when you have a headache. Sometimes my patients will tell me it hurts to brush their hair! Headaches can sometimes be caused by an irritation of one of the nerves in your head, particularly if the headache is in the back of your head.

Anti-inflammatory: Sharp neck pain usually comes from a degenerative joint or disc in the neck.  Sometimes it's from a muscle strain or sprain.  Early treatment options include a short course of nsaids (advil, aleve), gentle massage, moist heat, and focusing on posture.  If pain lasts greater than 2 weeks see your physician.

Interesting!: Involvement of both sides of anterior neck and throat without other areas of sensory or pain involvement, suggests a non-neurologic cause. Things such as hives, thyroid inflammation, severe lymph node swelling, laryngitis are suggested. These things can also cause localized pain.

Neck or shoulder: Shoulder problems will irritate the neck and neck will irritate shoulder. Levator scapula muscle serves as a trigger point.

Facet arthritis: You have 7 cervical vertibrae and 8 cervical nerves, each of which (except C-2) passes through a neural foramen. Irritation of the nerve root may be due to cervical facet arthritis or disc degeneration. Cervical x-rays are indicated (3 views).  A cervical epiduragram  or selective neurograms are indicated if pain is radicular. Sclerotomal pain may require facet injection; myotomal, DTM or TPIs.

i'm having shooting pain that is starting at the top of my spine and shooting up my neck?

Neck strain: Try Naproxen twice daily and Tylenol (acetaminophen) four times daily for a couple of days. If not improving, find an inexpensive chiropractor and go for only a few visits. If no improvement after that, see your regular doctor.  If there was no associated injury, l doubt it's disc related and mist likely  a severe muscle spasm pinching a nerve. Could benefit from trigger point injections from doctor.

Chronic head/neck pa: You might be experiencing a form of headache, may be migraine, if you get it often it could be helped with medications, call our consult line or se your PCP
