Shingles: Shingles can cause fairly dramatic pain which is followed within a few days by a rash. It usually appears in a particular location on one side of the body. The rash burns intensely, itches ; is made up blisters that open up ; crust over.  A person could also have a fever, chills, headache and  generalized aches ; pains with fatigue. There isn't a 'cure' but antiviral medications ; medications for.

Unlike relationship: It is unlikely to have this due to shingles unless  this involved the nervous system as encephalitis.  It would be good for her to get evaluated by geriatrician, many of whom may also run a memory clinic.

Shingles treatment: Although 7 days is often sufficient for valacyclovir (Valtrex) treatment of shingles, if new blisters are continuing to appear, treatment should be extended. Check with your doctor. Presumably the "postherptic" medicine is prednisone or other corticosteroid (?). That's the only kind of treatment normally used to minimize the nerve pain that can follow shingles (post-herpetic neuralgia).

Herpes zoster: If a person is breaking out with shingles (herpes zoster reactivation) there is internal antiviral medication that the person should start immediately. The medications would include Acyclovir , valcyclovir, or famcyclovir.

Accepted Answer

Herpes zoster: Keep taking the antibiotic.  The blisters should dry up after a few days.  If you're impatient, use a sterile needle and pop the blisters, then clean the area with some soap and water.  Then keep the area dry.
