Several causes: It could be restless legs syndrome (RLS) for which there is effective treatment. RLS can be related to iron deficiency anemia and some other causes. It is unclear how often you take the medications listed as they too could potentially contribute to your symptoms as can some vitamin deficiencies and some myopathic concerns, which are less likely. Please seek evaluation by your PCP.

DVT Risk Factors: There are several risk factors for Deep Venous Thrombosis. These are defined by Virchow's Triad: Stasis, Injury, and Hypercoagulability. If you have been sedentary, had an injury/operation, history of a blood clotting disorder, these are risk factors. Since you have severe cramps, it would be a good idea to have an exam by your physician who can perform a doppler examination to rule out DVT.

i had intense, bilateral shin cramps recently at night. my feet were flexing inward und upward so stronly that i couldn't stat standing to try and walk them out. super painful, what could be the possible causes?

: If your potassium has ever been low or ur taking BP meds get potassium checked. And discuss with your Dr.

See doc: Possible causes include vascular insufficiency and peripheral neuropathy.  See your primary care doctor to begin the evaluation. This is not likely to get better without treatment, and may get worse.

Cramps Cause?: Any tubular structure in the body response with pain to pressure causing distention if the tubular structure is the intestine for example the pressure is exerted by contraction of the wall as in gas pains. Similarly when the uterine muscle contracts there is cramping. Varicose veins are painful as they are forced to distend.   Uterine cramps at menses can be relieved by ibuprofen.

Mmm..: If you are healthy with no medical problem, taking no medications or laxative, no obvious local reason to have cramps, i would ignore it. We get weird things that come and go, and if it's not handicapping, i would be patient.

hi, i am visiting sf, and find that my shins are hurting a lot while walking and i have intense leg cramps. what can i do to alleviate. love to walk.?

Some thoughts...: For a traveler walking in san francisco and getting leg cramps and shin pains, some thoughts come to mind (and the visitor may have to call her dr. Back home for advice). With leg pains and leg swelling, the possibility of blood clots is there, especially if she had a long drive or a plane ride. Staying hydrated, with normal body electrolytes is important also. Some meds can affect electrolytes.

A Sticky situation.: Sometimes two events happening in close proximity can be coincidental, but then again they can appear to be a little too coincidental. Since you have never had the cramp before the shin incident, there could be link there. The fact that you have had the cramping for three days is troubling, in light of the shin injury. Because of the multiple reasons for calf cramping, you should be examined soon.

Lymphangitis: This might be sign of an infection. You may something as small as a little ingrown hair or infection of the toe, foot that you do not see, and the lymph vessel under the red line is draining/fighting the infection. Another differential would be an inflamed varicose vein, but those are usually not sudden to appear, and more blue-purplish.

are shin splints the same as cramps in lower leg muscles?

No: Shin splints occur in the front along shin, cramps occur in back in muscle belly proper ..... Usualy the gastrocnemius muscle.
