Knee Pain: Recovery time for a subluxed or dislocated and spontaneously reduced patella varies greatly, but generally weight-bearing can be initiated as soon as tolerated and activity can be gradually resumed either with or without a functional rehabilitation program as tolerated.  I expect a return to full activity within six weeks.

6-12weeks: If it was the first time you dislocated you knee cap, then the usual treatment is 3-6 weeks in a knee immobilizer followed by 6 weeks of physical therapy.  I usual put my patients in a patella tracking brace during this six weeks that they wear most of time.  After six weeks they only wear it for sports.  If it is not the first  dislocation then you should really thinking abou having surgery.

Few days to weeks: A kneecap dislocation resulting from a traumatic contact injury may be associated with supporting ligament injury and even fracture to the undersurface of the kneecap.  This often takes weeks for recovery.  Surgery may even be required a non-contact kneecap dislocation in someone with "loose joints" may only take a few days to resolve. A brace and strengthening exercises are recommended.

Depends on Treatment: Recovery varies widely based on the severity of the injury, associated injuries, and type of treatment. Non-operative treatment for an initial subluxation may only require 2-6 weeks. Operative treatment for more unstable or recurrent subluxations or those with associated injuries my require 4-6 months for recovery.

Rare: Patella baja is rare. Takes about 8 weeks to heal. May take another 8 weeks to get full range of motion and strength.

Patella dislocation: Greater chances for recurrence if you are younger or if you have a predisposition as a result of loose supporting tissue/ligaments, muscle weakness or imbalance, or bone deformity (usually a shallow trochlear groove).  Best treatment starts with strengthening exercises perhaps guided by a physical therapist, and a brace.

Arthroscopic surgery: Microfracture surgery is an arthroscopic surgical procedure where a sharp pick is used to poke holes into places of bare bone where cartilage is missing.  This creates bleeding bone that scabs over the bare bone with scar tissue.  Most surgeons limit patients weight bearing with crutches and possibly a knee brace for 4-6 weeks after the surgery.  Knee cap microfracture surgery has mixed results.

my husband's patella tendon was torn during surgery for a total knee replacement.  how will the recovery from the tendon injury effect tkr recovery?

It will definitely: prolong recovery to a degree as the patellar tendon is a significant part of knee stability and mobility.
