Sharp and Stabbing: Depending on the duration of your pain, this can be several things.  Lower back pain could be related to the muscles, facet joints  or discs. Sharp left upper bac: Many potential causes:
 rule out cervical or thoracic disc herniation vs acute muscle strain of paraspinal muscles  vs facet joint sprain  vs referred pain from other area especially abdomen/diaphram which also refers pain into upper back.

If this persist, you need an md to fully evaluate.
Try rest, antiinflam meds, localized heat, massage and if not better evaluate by md and ? Mri  vs injections.

New onset back pain: If the pain has been there for several weeks you should see a good primary care provider to have a full history taken and a good physical examination. At that point a rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plan can be developed. May be something as simple as office ergonomics to something much more serious. If the pain has been there for a "couple weeks" then you should be seen and examined.

Yes: Piriformis syndrome describes the set of symptoms that can occur from an abnormal piriformis muscle/tendon.  The piriformis begins in the pelvis and inserts on the hip and can cause back , hip, and buttock pain as well as pain that runs down the leg.
