Many possibilities : It can be caused by acid reflex, muscle strain , costochondritis , pericarditis and angina. Go to an urgent care and get evaluated.

Hard to know: Left upper quadrant pain often poses difficulty in diagnosis.  Things that live there are the kidney and tubes from the kidney, the spleen and the bowel.  The ribs themselves can be a problem as could pneumonia.  If not immediately relieve with otc pain meds, simple dietary changes and GI meds, then seek care soon.

Pain under (L) ribs: May be muscle spasm (called a stitch) that can be relieved by stretching the involved muscles. In that area, however, pain might be referred from stomach, pancreas, spleen, splenic flexure of colon, or ribs. If burning sensation &/or blisters, shingles is possible. If recent onset, stitch most likely, but if other organ problems, see pcp for workup.

Lots of stuff there: On the left side are the stomach, spleen, diaphragm (muscle for breathing), ribs, a part of the colon (large intestine), the tail end of the pancreas, etc... Pain can be from the ribs and their cartilage, a swollen spleen, stomach acidity/gastritis/reflux, muscle strains in the abdominal muscles or diaphragm, excess stool or gas in the colon, pancreatitis, a cancerous tumor, etc....

If you are older than 65, we worry about angina or heart attack depending on your medical health/history. If you are young, the most common causes are: GI issues/gas, musculoskeletal pain, infection/pneumonia, heart issues, referred pain from another source.
