See below: May be something simple like a muscle stitch (spasm) that can be relieved by stretching muscles in that area. Or might be internal problem like liver, gallbladder, duodenum, ascending colon, pancreatic head, etc. If stretching doesn't relieve it, see pcp for evaluation, testing if needed, treatment options.

RUQ anatomy: Anatomically, the right upper quadrant (RUQ) of the abdomen includes: liver, gallbladder, pancreatic head, bile ducts and ampulla, c-loop of the duodenum, stomach antrum and pylorus, the hepatic flexure of the colon.  Don't forget the diaphragm and lower chest are pretty close by. The abdominal musculature, ribs, and skin can all contribute as well to localizing RUQ pain. An exam is appropriate.

Pleurisy: It sounds like pleurisy.  If it has come up suddenly after you were better, you should be seen.

Internal organ?: Right sided pain is consistent with gallbladder disease, appendicitis and kidney stones, among other issues in women like endometriosis. If you get a fever, go to the Emergency Room, and pack a toothbrush. In a 27 year old the possibility of appendicitis is strong. Is there a chance of pregnancy?

Various: Pleurisy, pneumonia or a muscle pull are all possible causes for your discomfort.  Start with anti inflammatory medications for pain control.  If no improvement see our healthcare provider.

Gallbladder?: This sounds like pain associated with cholecystitis or gall bladder disease.  If pain associated with food intake, especially greasy foods, then it probably is the gall bladder.  You should have an evaluation from your primary care doctor.

Costochondritis: Sharp rib cage pain is usually cartilage irritation (costochondritis).  It is painful but harmless.  That being said, any persistent pain should be evaluated

Many possibilities: I always think of the worst possibilities: that's my job. If her pain increases at the "top" of the breath, that's called pleuritic pain - and can be a warning sign for pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung)! pain under the right rib cage can be  related to gallstones. I have seen right upper abdominal pain related to appendicitis, but it is usually right lower abdominal pain. See the doctor.

i been having sharp pain on right side of upper abdom. below my ribs. really hurts when i cough. sometimes lite headed. what can this be?

: right upper abdominal pain can come from a number of different causes. One of the first possibilities is gallbladder disease if the pain is related to food intake. A second possibility of write up a project pain could be a pneumonia with inflammation around the lining of the lungs which would account for the pain when  coughing.
