Alfalfa sprouts: Alfalfa sprouts are high in protein and easily digestible, making them a good food.  I am not aware of any problems with eating them, as long as they are fresh and have not spoiled.

Contamination: There have been problems with  salmonella and listeria food poisoning, unfortunately.  The same moist, warm conditions you need to grow sprouts can be similarly luscious for bacteria to grow too.  You can grow your own at home, but be very careful to keep things clean . .

An herb supplement: Alfalfa is used to treat kindney and prostate conditions and increase urine flow. It is also used for high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, diabetes and upset stomach. It seems to prevent cholesterol absorption in the gut.

Seed unsafe longterm: The seeds are unsafe longterm and may cause reactions similar to the autoimmune disease lupus. It may also cause the skin to become sensitive to the sun. It is unsafee to use during pregnancy and breast feeding because of its estrogen like effect. Autoimmune diseases might flare up from taking alfalfa.Hormone sensitive conditons as breast , uterine, ovarian, cancer and endometriosis might worsen.

No, but...: ...Alfalfa contains isoflavones which have a low and variable degree of estrogen like activity in animal models.  One would have to consume a lot of alfalfa to have much of an effect, and there are side effects associated with this supplement which would need to be seriously considered first.

Probably safe but...: Alfalfa is a field plant that can be cultivated to feed livestock or grow wild as a weed. If you believed all (or it seems to me any) of the therapeutic claims made by folks selling it, you'd be reading uncritically. The big concern is an unusual Amino Acid in alfalfa which in non-human animals is used in a model of lupus. Whether alfalfa really causes lupus in humans is unclear.
