i wake up shaking uncontrollably of a night, what causes it?

Night Shakes : Without more description it is hard to say. Are you experiencing shaking chills, a "wired" or involuntary muscle spasms? Sleep apnea, stress-related anxiety, and seizures can cause this. So can excess caffeine or even cigarette smoking in the evening. Do you awake in the morning refreshed, or are you "dragging" all day? If you can't seem to isolate the cause, make an appointment to see your doctor.

RLS: You could possibly have restless leg syndrome which can cause twitching  of your leg.

Several thots: A variety of sleep disorder problems may occur, such as Paroxysmal Limb Movements in Sleep (FKA nocturnal myoclonus), Restless Leg Syndrome, Sleep Apnea.  Cannot fully exclude nocturnal seizure activity, but I think this is less likely, based on your description.  Would start with sleep specialist, usually a pulmonologist.

Difficult: Atarax (hydroxyzine) and zyrtec should not be taken simultaneously...  
If this is a once time occurrence and there are no other symptoms like shortness of breath or chest pain, you could ignore it.  But if it continues medical attention is needed.

Depemds: We shake from sensations of cold (the chill before a fever, for example) anxiety and fatigue.  Please make sure you are healthy and have healthy sleep patterns before you excuse your symptoms.  A blood test panel may be recomended.

my husband had hypothermia symptoms last night. he is not shaking anymore but has a sweat. (he is dressed cooler without blankets and has no fever). is this cause for alarm?

Fever?: Hypothermia = low body temperature. He may have exactly the opposite, a high fever. People with fever with "shaking chills" usually feel cold. (Is that what you meant by hypthermia?). Fever with shaking chills indeed is cause for alarm. There are too many possible causes to even guess, but if the problem continues or if his temperature is over 39C, he needs to be seen immediately. Hyperventilation: These are classical symptoms of hyperventilation (overbreathing). When you breathe too fast and too deep, you wash out carbon dioxide from your blood and cause alkalosis. Alkalosis pushes calcium into the cells causing temporary hypocalcemia in the blood. This hypocalcemia causes muscle twitching and even sometimes tetany.

See Doctor!: Shaking uncontrollably upon awakening is not normal. If you have a history of anemia, then you definitely need to call your doctor, and see what else might be going on. This could be a number of things, depending on the source. S/he may need to check your blood pressure, and fasting blood sugar levels to give you a better idea what's going on. Don't delay!
