It depends: Shadow is a general term used in describing objects on a chest radiograph. For instance the heart creates a shadow on the x-ray. Can you be any more specific?

Accepted Answer

No: Not sure what they are referring to when they say expire.  Once the x-ray has been taken it is what it is.   Your lungs may change within hours after the x-ray is taken, rendering the prior film invalid for medical purposes, but it still stands on its own.  Hope I have explained this ok.

Yes determine cause: It is important to be sure the cause of the pleural fluid is found and treated.  Effusions are not always seen well on chest xray and a ct scan or lung ultrasound can detect if there are remaing pockets of fluid (known as loculated fluid).  Numerous causes of pleural fluid but important to make sure  to evaluate for pus in the fluid, rule out tuberculosis, malignancy, heart failure, pneumonia...

can an x-ray differentiate between fluid on the lung and pneumonia?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Chest xray is good for differentiating fluid from pneumonia; fluid may collect around the lung rather than in the lung (known as a pleural effusion).  Also pneumonia can be very dense and involve a complete lobe of the lung whereas fluild may be more patchy.  Clinical history and exam of the patient also helps to make sure the diagnosis is accurate.

Pulmonary fibrosis: Pulmonary fibrosis is a pattern seen on ct scanning of the lung.  There are several things that can cause fibrosis such as smoking, exposure to asbestos, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, and certain medicines.  Some of these diseases can be treated while others are progressive and fatal.  Fibrotic lung diseases cause a restrictive physiology that could be described as hardening.

had the flu 14 days ago, went to the lung dr. had a lung x-ray, dr. said my lungs look healthy, but i still cough allot of mucus (ps: have sinusitis).

Sinusitis: Upper respiratory infections, including sinusitis, may produce large amounts of inflammatory secretions resulting in sputum production and post-nasal drip. Try using saline rinses with a neti-pot, steroid nasal spray and a decongestant (pseudoephedrine, oxymetozaline, etc.).  Check with your pharmacist for otc products. They will be happy to help. i have copd and was hospalized in january a x-ray showed nodual on my lung is it usual to remove benign tumors from the lung?

Not if benign: .We wouldn't routinely remove benign nodules from the lung, assuming of course that we're really certain that it's benign.  Nodules like this need to be followed for a while by CT scanning to make sure they don't grow.  If it seems to be growing at a pretty good rate, we would want to at least biopsy it to make sure it's benign.

my x-ray shows a thickened pleura in the mid-lower area of my right lung due to ptb. does it cause pain due to pressure on the lung during exertion?

Pleural thickening: Most of the time does not cause pain, although there are patients who complain of it. We can't predict who do. It may be that it can limit the expansion of your lung but the extent again is individualized.

would an ekg, blood test, chest x-ray, and echocardiogram diagnose a blood clot in the lung?

Accepted Answer

Maybe: If the blood test was a "d-dimer" and there were certain specific findings on your x-ray, maybe.  The definitive test for a pulmonary embolus (blood clot in lung) is a ct angiogram.  However, if you had a negative d-dimer, that makes it extremely unlikely that you have a pe.
