Discover, avoid : Food allergies vary in their intensity. If you are allergic, your body reacts to it in various ways.Skin tests can be positive and the blood can show elevated antibody levels. Elevated  ige is important and  means a major reaction is possible.Those foods must be avoided.If skin tests show some reaction but ige levels are low, the food may be tolerated. Discuss which foods to avoid with your allerg.

It frequently takes a team of an allergist and nutritionist to manage food allergies and to find a diet that is proper for growth and development.  Currently, the treatment for food allergies is avoidance, however, there are clinical trials evaluating desensitization procedures.  Your local allergist will know who to contact.

Use your resources: A consultation with a dietician may be immensely helpful; call a local hospital and ask to speak with a dietitian to determine if they have an outpatient program or know of someone in your area who offers such services. There are many web-based resources, and web sites that will give you a list of foods or recipes you can purchase from them that are safe for your given combo of allergies.

It can happen: Food allergy can develop during adulthood.  The most common foods that cause allergies to develop during adulthood include nuts and shellfish.  I recommend that you carry an epi-pen and know how to use it in case you eat nuts by accident.

epi pen at home, school and with you when you are away from home is an important part of the management. Avoidance of any known food allergens which may trigger symptoms by reading food labels, avoiding public faucets, and hidden ingredients will help prevent a reaction. Your doctor can provide additional information.

Most: You may need to avoid some beers, since they can be made from wheat.  But, most wine and spirits should be no problem.  Just be sure to tell the bartender your allergies in case they use any ingredients in your mixed drink that you could be allergic to.

How : How was it diagnosed? Allergies can occur at any time in life. The only good therapy is avoidance. If you have significant reactions you should carry an epi-pen and have a medi-alert badge. Talk to your doctor about these.
