my mum's got emphysema, been in hosp 4 2 wks, prognosis is 2 clots on her lungs & a hole in lungs, she's 67, could she recover & live much longer?

Emphysema: Yes. Sounds like she has a pe (clot in lung) and emphysema (hole in lung). Clot can be treated with blood thinners and emphysema with inhalers/oral medications. If she is smoking, this will increase rate of decline& frequency of flares from her lung disease in addition to increasing risk for developing various cancers/ heart disease/ and future clots!

Emphysema : if you have mild emphysema and follow your lung  doctors' recommendations carefully especially not smoking, you can do well

COPD: Emphysema is a chronic medical condition, most often associated with tobacco smoking.  Emphysema or COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is basically an inflammatory response of the lungs to long term exposure to an irritant.  If you are a smoker, stop immediately to prevent further progression.  Please do not be scared, but instead be informed as to the preventive measures you can take.

Very Poor.: Small Cell Lung Cancer is very hard to treat successfully. Spreads very early in its course. If one is lucky enough to be diagnosis before spread cure is possible.

Not good: I personally feel the suffering from from emphysema/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(copd) is worse than death from it--feeling winded all the time, can't do much once it is severe/oxygen dependent; u really suffer with a simple cold, flu. Your life is so limited with severe illness. People can live on for yrs, but quality of life not so good. So, quit smoking. Consult doc. Good luck.

Possibly: Pregnancy does increase pulmonary strain by increasing metabolic demand and decreasing overall lung capacity. The key is to work closely with your OB and pulmonary specialists to minimize risk.

severe copd and emphysema.  off prednizone a week ago and been on o2 24/7. what could be the cause of o2 dropping apon getting up. never did before.

Possible O2 time: The steroids only reduce inflammation. Not improve your oxygen. So possible your lung function severe enough that you may qualify for supplemental o2. Need to have your pft done to determine if your worse or not. Oxygen will improve your survival as well.
Other causes maybe your developing an infection such as pneumonia as well. See your md and test your o2 while walking or at night sleeping.
