why do i still have seizures even thought i had surgery and had my brain tumor removed?

Accepted Answer

Not uncommon: Unfortunately, even with full tumor resection, only 80% of patients will have complete seizure disorder relief.  10% or so will note improved seizure frequency/intensity and the rest of the patients will have no improvement of their seizures despite surgery.

Not uncommon: AVM can cause focal seizures and secondarily generalized seizures. Sometimes seizures occur years after surgery. Often seizures are well controlled with a single anticonvulsant

It depends: Some patients may be seizure free after total resection of a brain tumor. It's best to consult with their doctor.

Accepted Answer

Do not: Do not go off seizure medication without explicit direction from your doctor.  Going of seizure medication can precipitate a very serious form of seizure called status epilepticus.

Accepted Answer

Could be: residual scarring, unrelated condition that lowered your seizure threshold, or even recurrent tumor.  Consult again with your neurosurgeon.

my mother is 65 years old and has been taking keppra 3,000 mg a day. she suffers from seizures since she had a brain tumor removed 3 years ago. she has had a dry cough for 3 weeks now, no fever. can she take dayquil of nyquil to help with the cough?

Pharmacist: Ask your pharmacist for advice regarding possible interactions with these two medications. He/she will have access to much more information on this question. However I don't recommend using cough preparations with multiple ingredients while taking antiseizure medication as excessive drowsiness and confusion could occur. Perhaps a very light dose of Nyquil may be recommended,but check first.

Neurologist: If you believe you are having confusional states ; seizures, it is highly recommended you consult a neurologist. He/she can determine what is occurring by proper history, examination, ; ancillary tests.

Status epilepticus: Repetitive seizures occurring without awakening in between represents a medical emergency, and can result in permanent brain damage due to local hypoxia and hypoglycemia, which chemical substrate depletion.  Cognitive loss and even more abnormalities can be experienced, and if not treated, death can ensue.

Amnesia: Frequent recurrent seizure will have damaging effect on brain......Retardation, memory problem. More often it is a association of the primary condition.
