hi.. i am taking tegratol cr300 mg daily and my ggtp levels have increased  to 130 and they should be lesser than 38 . i cannot stop the drug as the seizures reoccur on stopping the drug , and no other seizure drug has suited me till now. can u suggest me

Continue: If you have no side effects continue the medicine  The levels are a guide and occasionally patients are controlloedwith higher and lower levels  If you have no dizziness or balance problem continue and periodically check the liver function and electrolytes

does long term use of anti-seizure drug such as neurontin changes brain chemistry permanently in some way or another?? i have been on neurontin 100 mg for nerve pain and mild restless legs. i am worried about long term use effect on brain, is it safe?

: There is NO evidence that Neurontin or any other anti-epileptic drug has potential to permanently change "brain chemistry", but does modify neurotransmitter function while being used.  100 mg is extremely low dose, and may have suboptimal benefits to treat your conditions.

The potential for: a drug combination to cause seizures does  not mean that they will cause seizures.  Other things are factored in - such as your age, if there is pulmonary or renal disease, if there  is pre-existing seizure disorder. It : It is probably true than anyone can have a seizure under the right conditions.  These conditions include poisoning by prescription or recreational drugs, withdrawal from prescription or recreational drugs (including alcohol), brain injuries, general illnesses, and abnormal levels of blood salts (electrolytes -- including sodium).  When people have seizures with provocation, they are not considered to have epilepsy, and usually don't require long term seizure medication.

People who have a tendency to have repeated seizures with little or no provocation have epilepsy.  The diagnosis is made by history, and supported by results from tests like brain-wave recordings (eegs) and brain imaging (usually mri). Epilepsy usually does require long-term use of seizure medications like depakote, or other interventions like epilepsy surgery.

Taking Depakote for a provoked seizure is an unusual clinical approach.  Depakote can be given for other reasons.  Since Depakote use can be accompanied by serious short term and long term side effects, it is important to see a doctor to develop a better understanding for its use in specific cases.

Acute vs subsequent: Acute seizures during the overdose indicate toxic state or withdrawal state.  This may resolve with good supportive care.  Subsequent seizures usually indicate severe brain damage with bad outcome.

Whatever works: Several medications have been successful in treating absence seizures.  In children this may be ethosuximide, valproate, lamictal, etc.  In adults with focal abnormalities this may include trileptal, vimpat, (lacosamide) zonegran, etc.  A quality eeg is necessary, and a good neurological evaluation is necessary.

Dilantin: Dilantin is a good medication for seizures.  There are newer medications that may have fewer side effects.  However, if you have been taking Dilantin for years and your seizures are controlled, I am of the opinion "if it a'int broke don't fix it."

You can't donate: at most centers because of your diagnosis (the procedure they use to obtain plasma will remove your seizure meds). Most plasma donation centers will not let you donate after they take you back for your initial examination and complete the review your medical history and medications.  Furthermore, you will spend about one to two hours at the plasma center before they get around to rejecting you.

The amount of time marijuana/THC can be detected depends on:

Potency 
Duration

Method used to detect THC or its metabolites.
