Black flashes: Would follow up with optometrist ( as they are more accesible) today. May be dry eyes but could also be  retina issue like detachment or autoimmune condition. Follow up today with optometrist.

Ophthalmologist: Flashes are often benign vitreous separations, but when they occur in bunches  or are quite extensive, you have to be concerned about detachment of the retina and you must consult an ophthalmologist urgently.

: There are several possible causes of these symptoms and all require an urgent visit with your doctor or ER.  Beginning of a detached retina, stroke, and panic attack are the first three that come to mind immediately. Call your doctor and if you cannot be seen right away, go to your nearest ER for evaluation.

Possible retina: You may be having a problem with your retina (in the back of your eye).  It is very important that you see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.

Possible torn retina: I would see a retinal doctor if available, or a general ophthalmologist.  New floater and light flashes can be caused by a torn retina and it is better treated early.

Listen to your body: Such a visual disturbance can come from inadequate blood flow to the visual cortex of the brain.  May need more fluids,  if associated with change in position, try lying down or putting head between legs if sitting.  It can be a vascular spasm before a migraine.  Eat 6 healthy meals a day, avoiding processed foods, get a good night sleep, not too much melatotnin, move through the day and destress.

Retinal phenomenon: Flashes of light can be due to stimulation of the retinal by either external pressure on the eye, or by pulling on the retina by the vitreous strands within the eye.  These flashes are generally very short lived.  Longer lasting lights that may form patterns can be due to migraine aura.  It is a good idea to have a dilated exam if this is a new or common occurence, especially with new floaters.
