when a big toe is broken, is it better to use crutches and not walk at all, or to use the walking boot if the doctor allows? i am scared of walking!

Accepted Answer

Walk with boot/shoe: If the big toe is broken, you can put your full weight on the foot, especially if you are wearing a post op shoe ( a walking boot may be a little excessive if it come all the way to the knee.)  i personally had a broken great toe and now with complete healing, i play sports, referee soccer games, etc.  Follow the doctors directions and you will do great.

wear boot for non displaced 4th metasaursal break that i  take off at night. do i need to put boot back on just to walk from the bed to the bathroom?

Accepted Answer

Yes.: You need some sort of stiff-soled shoe for a mild break, even with minimal walking, to ensure that you do not impede healing.  A "post-op shoe" is easy to put on and usually is enough to protect this sort of fracture if the boot is too cumbersome to put on at night.

Yes: That is the idea of the walking boot.
But talk to your doctor since some still want you to use crutches with no weight bearing.

i've had a pin in my 4th digit for 2 weeks.  it feels creaky when i walk sometimes.  i wear a sandal boot. is the mild random creaking normal?

Creaky ok: Is the toe sore, red or swollen?  If so then creaky is not ok but part of the inflammatory process and should be checked. If just creaky with no other symptom then it's ok!

i fell on the side walk about a month ago. the doctors have me crutches and a walking boot. the walking boot doesn't help that much. is it fractured?

Occult fractures : Sometimes broken bones do not show up on the first x-ray as cracks in the bone can be very hard to see.  If you are still having significant pain then you may wish to get a second x-ray.

Swelling is common: Swelling is one of the most common concerns of patients.  With most injuries or surgery, swelling is common for 3-6 months afterward.  If you have swelling without pain or limitation it is likely not a problem.  I recommend you discuss this concern with your doctor.

i broke my ankle then had surgery and everything is going well. will it be okay to walk with boots?

Check with MD: Check with your ortho md who performed the surgery to see when and if walking with boots is ok.

Yes if healed: If your doctor has told you that the toes are healed you should be able to wear comfortable shoes. If you are not sure of your healing status speak with the surgeon who performed the procedures.

It immobilizes : The foot so that the foot is not going thru its full range. They often have rocker bottoms, so your not spending a lot of time on any one particular part of the foot.

Accepted Answer

Shoes: Anything with a good durable sole. The flimsier the shoe, the less supportive and shock absorbing it is. Often, you get what you pay for with shoes so the better quality ones are the way to go.
