i had thyroid surgery 6 years ago and i seem to be developing a very raspy voice, i could it be related to my surgery? i am very prone to scar tissue.

Hoarseness: It is fairly doubtful that it would be related to the thyroid surgery, as you should have developed voice symptoms early after the surgery, not delayed. Scar tissue would not typically change your voice. There may be other reasons for the raspiness like allergies, postnasal drip or laryngopharyngeal reflux. See an ENT for fiberoptic laryngeal exam.

Hard to say: One can get estimates by asking around. There are doctor's bills for office visits, the actual surgery, and hospital visits if he charges separately for hospital care days (presuming one has to stay in the hospital). Hospital bills are hard to predict, and there are separate bills for lots of different items such as labs, meds, x-rays, etc... And also anesthesiologists, radiologists, pathologists.

yes: For thyroid surgery, an anterior neck incision is used and the risk is low. The recurrent laryngeal nerve is examined during placement and removal of the anesthetic breathing tube, your surgeon will be well trained to avoid this nerve during surgery. If  the nerve becomes dysfunctional, it is usually temporary. Take family/friend to ask these details of your surgeon. Be well.

When you can eat: Whenever you can resume eating, you can eat meats again.  There is no time frame needed to refrain from eating red meats.

Need more info: Hi. Except in pregnancy, thyroid surgery is generally only done for thyroid cancer or to rule out thyroid cancer. What was the surgical pathology on your thyroidectomy? Easy: Subtotal literally means removal of part, not all, of the throid gland. How much is up to your surgeon and the nature of the disease process.

Very short time: Recovery time after uncomplicated  thyroid surgery will be very brief, will be home same day or next day , will be able to go back to office type of work in a wk.
