Gender Selection: No. The only way to guarantee a baby's gender is to do in vitro fertilization and then test the gender of each embryo prior to implantation. You can try to filter sperm based on weight to select a gender but this method is not fool proof. There is no way to naturally encourage one gender over the other.

Simple but complex: It would be an entire semester course at college, but only space for one thought here. For all-boy families, it WOULD BE NICE to have a girl, and vice versa. The danger is in wanting something too much, and in the need to respect other people's wants if others are to respect our wants. Many people value the life of a boy over a girl. To fight that societal problem, we should not select either sex.

No: Heart rate isn't indicative of baby's gender, careful ultrasound exam or even more invasive procedures like CVS would tell, I can appreciate social implications, better wait though or resort to ultrasound, wish you a healthy pregnancy and a healthy infant of any gender

Sex determination: by heart rates is not  reliable.  By this stage, your OB should be able to accurately determine the gender of your baby with an ultrasound.  Congratulations!

Per kilo body weight: Most antibiotics have dosages by milligrams per kilo body weight per day; amoxicillin, for example, is 40-100 mg/kg/day, so an 11-pound (5-kilo) baby would get up to 500 mg per day, usually in 2 doses, so that's 250 mg twice a day, maximum.

Yes, : Yes, any imaging studies that involve ionizing radiation (x-rays, ct scans, fluoroscopy, angiography, nuclear imaging) are accompanied with an extremely small risk of developing cancer. People are normally exposed to approximately 3.0 msv of naturally occurring background radiation each year (from radon gas, cosmic rays, naturally occurring radioisotopes, etc). A ct of the head results in approximately 5.0 msv exposure; in other words, a ct of the head carries the same radiation risk as living about 1.7 years on earth. Using leukemia as an example- the normal childhood risk of developing leukemia is 1 in 6, 700; a ct of the abdomen and pelvis increases this risk to about 3 in 6, 700.

Children are more at risk than adults for developing cancer because they have more time to develop cancer after the initial exposure. The average latent period before cancer develops is about 25 years for most cancers and 7 to 10 years for leukemia. However, cancer can develop more than 50 years after radiation exposure. Most modern radiology departments take great lengths to reduce the radiation exposure for pediatric patients; more information is available at www.Imagegently.Org.

Infants are naturally nearsighted until their eyes improve around 4-5, but some need early help.

infant with bilateral upj.  severe in left, mild in right.  15/85 function per mag3 scan.  right function now affected (uptake, excretion). surgery likely for left.  how to handle right? worrisome?

UPJ obstruction: Relieving the obstruction on the left side, and improved function, may take the pressure of the right kidney and may not be a problem. It needs to be followed closely with repeated scans and renal u/s.
