i have a small bump on my right sc joint.  there is no pain currently.  i recently completed a 15 day round of 100 pushups/day.  any ideas?

Small bump: You may have done damage to your stern-clavicular joint. Please see your PCP for an examination to determine severity of the damage and need for specific treatment.

what could cause swelling at the sc joint area? i am swollen on both sides of the manubrium, 20yr old male, works out.

Over use!: If you are lifting heavy weights, expecially bench presses or military presses, this puts a lot of stress on the clavicle and its joints at the neck and shoulder.  You should rest for 1-2 weeks, no upper extremity weights.  If this does not help seee your doctor to get it checked out.

i have upward anterior left sc joint dislocation but it's been 6weeks wnna have surgery what r the risks and can it really be back as it once were?

Not necessary: Repair of anterior SC dislocation is elective and mostly cosmetic (you trade a bump for a scar) posterior dislocation is fixed urgently or emergently if there is vascular or tracheal embarrassment. Chronic posterior dislocations are left alone. Overall if it's assymptomatic I'd leave it alone, these surgeries are very close to the great vessels with the attendant risks of vessel injury

what physical therapy is appropriate for dislocated sc joint?

Guided Therapy: Depending upon whether this was an anterior or posterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint you may or may not need surgery.  If non-surgical, brief immobilization and then guided therapy with a physical therapist to increase range of motion and limit pain.  If surgical, you may similarlly need immobilization and rehab but of a slightly longer duration.  Most heal nicely without surgery.

Sc joint: Most sternoclavicular injuries are treat without surgery.  If you are doing well now without symptoms 3 mth after injury i would advance activity as tolerated.

See Specialist: People with sc instability need to be evaluated by shoulder specialist. The best pt is to learn to avoid certain activities and positions. Also generalized shoulder and periscapular strengthening.  You need a ct or MRI to evaluate extent of subluxation and determine if ligamentous reconstruction is warranted.  Most doctors that work on shoulders don't even see these patients.

NO, not always: Few things in medicine are "always" anything. Some benign tumors can be hard and fixed. Obviously it is important to get this further evaluated and you may not know what it is for sure until it is excised. Try not to worry too much as there is a reasonable chance it is not malignant.

i am 20 years old at 17 i dove of a bridge into open water i have a first rib cartilage fracture at the sc joint, what can be done? will it ever heal?

Yes it should: Sterniclavicular injuries are common. At age 17 as u stated this is really a fracture as the medial clavicle growth plate is one of the last to close( usually age 18-21). It's unusual that u are still having pain here 3 years after the initial injury unless u are continuing to 'stress' the joint( bench press, push- ups etc.)almost all of these injuries are treated non-operatively... Gl!

Sure: Young people tend to heal very well, but realize that sometimes a cure will involve surgery. See an orthopedic surgeon.

how is a sternoclavicular joint dislocation typically diagnosed?

Accepted Answer

X-ray: It can sometimes be diagnosed with plain x-ray, but often a better study is ct scan which offers a 3-dimensional view of a 3-dimensional problem.  Treatment is based on the severity of the dislocation, the direction of the dislocation, and whether it is acute or chronic.  Suspected acute dislocations require early managment.
