Not usually: Even spoiled onions may be unpleasant to eat but rarely contain the bacteria which cause food poisoning.  When onions are admixed with foods containing especially eggs and mayonaisse, then food poisoning can occur, but the source is not the onions.

Soft or firm: Onions can keep a long time in a cool, dark space. An onion is usually rotten if it is soft/mushy. If it is firm, it should be ok...Even if it has started growing a greenish plant from the middle. Just cut that part out.

Sure: It should be fine, but limit the amount of salt and butter that you use.

Nothing: I do not like onions and so do not eat them, unless fully  cooked or sauteed. Nothing has gone wrong with me. Perhaps ask her if she would eat them if prepared differently.

Part of healthy diet: It is not inherently any better than other foods.  If you like it eat it.

Maybe. Hard to tell: The medical literature says that onions may help, may not help, or may make breathing worse. Confusing! it looks like it only makes it worse in people with allergies or if they breathe dried onion dust. Some people claim that onion contains a substance that can dilate (expand) the lung bronchi. But according to my quick calculations, you need 30 onions a day to achieve this effect!

Onions / gout: YES .   Onions are safe. Take in tart cherry juice and tart cherries, 20/day. Add Lemon extract 4 tblspns / day. And avoid alcohol, animal fats, organ meats, anchovies, sardines, tuna, salmon, and shellfish. Limit other meats to 4 oz per day. Avoid high fructose corn syrup containing drinks and foods.  Add egg whites, quinoa, soy as protein. Eat lots of citrus fruit and veggies. Drink 3 liters /d

Saute vs. grill: In general, grilled foods are healthier since no additives & most nutrients are preserved in the food through grilling.
