Shingles itch: It can help but is most helpful for poison ivy.  It will still help with the symptoms of the itch.  You may also want to try acyclovir ointment on the areas.  Good luck and feel better!

Not best treatment: It could help since it has a mild steroid but it might not be the best treatment. If you have active shingles, please visit your doctor, he/she might recommend anti viral medication and anti inflammatory medications. If the pain is persistent after the rash is gone, topical Lidocaine patches along with a nerve pain medication are the best course of treatment.

Sarna use: Sarna contains menthol (0.5%) and camphor (0.5%) which some people may not tolerate or could sting if there is any open skin. It is designed to help a "general itch" from dry skin, insect bites, sunburn or contact with poison ivy/oak/sumac. First try using a thick moisturizing cream (CeraVe) or emollient (Aquaphor), and you may need to see a dermatologist for a prescription if it doesn't improve.

You can stop: if the initial period of itching has stopped, then ok to stop using lotion (1-2 weeks should be adequate).  If skin remains dry, you could switch to &quot;non-medicated&quot; emollient such as Vanicream or Aquaphor, which would be less sensitizing. I hope I understood the question.
