Acne care: Looking at and comparing the pros and cons of both salicylic acid vs benzoyl peroxide they are both very evenly matched with no real winners. I find benzoyl peroxide better for my acne, but then there are also may people who would disagree and go with salicylic acid is  better at treating acne. So if you have never used either treatments use one then the other for 30 days. See what is best.

Clearing pores: Benzoyl peroxide is a drying agent that kills the bacteria causing acne. Salicylic acid removes dead skin, unclogs pores, and kills the bacteria. Salicylic acid is more effective than benzoyl peroxide in clearing the pores. It also has less side-effects that benzoyl peroxide.

Two products: These are two effective ingredients in acne treatments, but they work differently and I don't think are usually combined in the same product. Salicyclic acid aids exfoliation and prevents clogged pores. Benzoyl peroxide works by killing bacteria that cause breakouts.  They are both very drying so figuring out how much of each your skin can handle is important. I think you need two products:)

Too much is too much: No need to use Benzoyl Peroxide and or Salicylic acid more than twice a day --- irritation will follow.

See a dermatologist: Your acne is a function of hormones. Certain birth control can make it better, other birth control can make it worse. Do you have normal menstrual cycles? You will probably do well with oral spironolactone and topical tretinoin. This usually works in 3 months, then is continued. If it fails, oral isotretinoin will rescue you.

No: They work by different mechanisms one is keratolytic and peels salicylic acid and the other kills bacteria. The two can be used in combination.

: You should use either one.
Adapalene cream is now available over the counter, very effective for acne prevention, you should use it along with Benzoyl.
Use sunscreen lotion when going out for protection when using these products.

Retinoic acids: I doubt you're allergic to both, though they are both unpleasant to use and will irritate the heck out of your skin. That's part of how they work. If you are not able to tolerate these, a retinoic acid derivative toically is a good start. Your physician can add something else to the regimen if you're not clear in two weeks.

Options: Your physician may offer you topical Clindamycin instead; you may be able to tolerate a retinoic acid derivative, an oral antibiotic may work its magic, or if you can take & want the oral contraceptive pill, it may clear you.
