why did my 3 1/2 mo old breast fed babies poop smell different (almost a medicinal smell!) when on erythromycin eye ointment for eye infection?

Hard to say: This could be a situation where antibiotic somehow got on the baby's hand and made its way into the GI tract, OR, possibly something you are eating in your diet could be affecting the poop. The only thing that will prove what caused this is whether the funny poop smell is gone after the eye treatment is stopped for a week or so...

when i was an infant, i had an allergic reaction to erythromycin. i still tell docs that i'm allergic to that med. is this still necessary?

PROBABLY, but...: Your 'allergy' to an antibiotic as an infant may not have been a true allergy e.g. What was the reaction? Rash? Or other reaction? The 'allergy'
 may or may not still exist in you currently but we usually do not take any chances.  We hardly use Erythromycin anymore so it is easy to get around.

is it safe to use metrogel and erythromycin topical ointments for treating severe rosecea pustules during pregnancy 24 weeks ? or that harms the baby

No harm to baby: But you probably have hormonal acne which is worse in early pregnancy but likely to subside from 30 weeks on. When you are not pregnant and not nursing you can take spironolactone to stop the acne.

Yes: Erythromycin is safe to use to infant and pregnant woman.  If you have pink eye its viral conjunctivitis, you may not need the antibiotic for it.  Time will take care of it.  Just wash your eye with cold water or put cold compressors.

Yes and probably: Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic.  It is not related to the penecillins nor cephalosporins to which you had allergies. There should be no cross reactivity.  The standard treatment for stye is heat and compression (squeezing) then surgical incision and drainage if initial therapy is unsuccessful. If a patient has an eye infection with discharge, the antibiotic ointment goes inside the eyelid.

Pink eye: Both drugs are safe during your pregnancy.

Safe yes: Ointment is a little over kill, drops work just as well and do not blur the vision.  Pink eye is self limited, meaning that without treatment it will resolve in 2 weeks. Treatment is given to shorten the course of infection.

how is erythromycin ointment applied to your eye to treat pinkeye?

Accepted Answer

Inside lid: You should pull on the lower lid by rolling your finger on the cheek bone.  This creates a pocket into which you can apply the ointment which should about a short line from the tube.  Release the lid and the ointment will smear over the whole eye with the first blink.
