my 18 month old gets a runny nose every time after his swimming lessons could it be an allergy?

Accepted Answer

Irritants: Chlorinated water may cause temporary irritation of the nasal passages. If you have a family history of allergies, your infant has a higher likelihood of developing allergies.
Nasal saline drops after swimming may help to relieve his runny nose, for both causes. 
If the problem persists, please see your pediatrician.

Probably: If the kid is otherwise well i see no reason to exclude them from swimming. Were s/he to be running fever or other worrisome symptoms i would avoid the activity.

Accepted Answer

Not recommend: Most of the time when children are sick due to virus, but you do not want to give to  other children in the pool. Furthermore their immnune system is not strong while they are sick, they can get other infection that are consider opportunistic like fungus.

is it ok if i go swimming tomorrow with a cough and runny nose? (both come and go) i also have been taking cough syrup morning and night and tylenol sinus and flu in the mornings and using a nasal reliever for my nose and they help really well?

: Are your symptoms from common cold, flu, covid, or something much more serious? You're treating symptoms, not the cause. See your GP or Urgent Care for diagnosis/treatment. And stay out of crowded places until you are symptom free so as to not infect someone else.

3 ear infections in a row (over 2mths) for 2.5 & 3.5 year olds. also had cold symptoms cough and runny nose. started with swimming. caused by it?

Swimming usually ok: Swimming CAN cause EXTERNAL ear infections (probably not what they had). Likely the culprit was a viral syndrome (cold with cough &amp; runny nose). Repeat infections are not uncommon. But also keep in mind that it can takes months for the fluid to resolve from behind the eardrum, which can cause continued hearing issues and discomfort, and is NOT a re-infection, but is often misdiagnosed as such.

Pool & stuffy noses: While pools are sometimes sources of allergens like molds & pollen (especially if outdoors), most nasal congestion following swimming is likely due to irritants like chlorine, temperature changes from getting in & out of the water, or positional changes (as you swim, blood that normally pools in the legs while upright flows towards the head more easily and fills the nasal tissues).

my 11 y.o. son always have a stuff nose after swimming in the pool anything i can do to prevent him from having stuff nose?

Nasal stuffiness: Try otc Claritin or zyrtec (oral) & saline nasal spray to flush out the nose. May be irritation from the chlorine in the pool water, possibly a vasomotor rhinitis. A prescription nasal steroid spray may give additional benefits if others help but not enough.

after swimming in the public swimming pool i have a strange feeing in my nose, like if i am getting ill with flu. i have no cough or fever, no pains, just feels as if my nose deep inside is filled with pus. but nothing comes out. it stays for 3-4 day?

: Use saline nasal drops for a few days. If still the same feeling pl see an ENT doc. I dont think you have anything filled with pus.

i have an allergic reaction (nasal congestion, sneezing) after swimming in fresh water (lake or river) when water gets into my nose/eyes, but not in the ocean. what can i do to reduce avoid a reaction, but still be able to swim?

Antihistamine pill +: Antihistamine pill such as cetirizine or loratadine 1 or 2 a day. Also steroid nose spray such as flutacasone once a day.

there is like a pressure in my right side of my head after swimming and i can still feel it today..  is it bad?

Accepted Answer

Likely Not serious.: Depending on where on the right side of your head your pain is and if you go deep under water when swim (like diving), your symptoms may be due to a sinus headache from change in pressure form going under water.  Try just doing surface swimming with no diving and see if symptoms still occur.  It they do, then seek medical attention.  Take Care!
