hello. i have a lump that's been in my mouth under my teeth in the soft gum part. some days its inflated, other days, its "deflated" with a rough patch there. i'm a smoker and i smoke on average one pack per day but i've only been smoking for three years.

Oral lesion: Greetings. As a smoker, you are at high risk for oral cancer to develop. As with every smoker I see, I ask you to quit smoking for your health but also for your loved ones. If you had to tell patients they had cancer like I do, you'd understand. Every patient who hears those words wish they could go back and stop! See your ENT doctor to have the spot in your mouth looked at and maybe biopsied.

Ask: Ask your Dentist after he/she has examined you for a knowledgeable answer.  Upper jaw torus is usually singular and in midline.  You have to be examined to be diagnosed, but odds are that your lesions are not cancerous.

Holes?: You are probably feeling the normal texture of the gums which is referred to as stippling. It is a result of the microscopic elevations and depressions of the surface of the gingival tissue due to the connective tissue projections within the tissue. You can confirm this with your own dentist.

May not be bad: An experienced person has to take a look. Possibilities are many and may  be  minor. Thrush and leukoplakia come to my mind. They may need medical treatment. Meanwhile try intense hygiene with frequent toothbrushing and mouth wash after meals.

Composite Patch: What are you trying to accomplish? It the tooth sensitive? Is the metal margin visible when you smile? How old is the crown? Maybe it's best to just leave it and keep it clean and visit your dentist twice a year to have it monitored. Your dentist is best prepared to advise you what is best for this tooth.

I would analyze your routines and see if this applies to your situation, i would then have your dentist do a routine oral cancer screening and if necessary he/she will send you to an oral surgeon for biopsy.
